Tallmark Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Don't ask me my age either. But I will tell you my weight, because I'm buffed! lol Quote
Tallmark Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 I've been working out for 40 years. Occasionally I meet others who have been working out nearly as long. Most people have joint problems even if they've been working out a long time. I wondered why I still have a youthful body. God opened my eyes to realize that it's because I'm a vegan. I hope this post doesn't make me sound like I'm full of myself, but it is what it is. Quote
GreatLakesGramma Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Tallmark, I have no wrinkles at 54 either, because I've been vegan for 23 years. I already believed this before I read several years ago that there is a compound in milk that damages the skin and causes wrinkling. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. Lewis
Tallmark Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Good for you GreatLakesGramma. Isn't it the caesin (sp) that's in dairy that causes wrinkles? I think the lack of proper water causes that too. What do you think? Quote
GreatLakesGramma Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 I don't know which compound in milk damages skin, but I do know that casein is one of the compounds in milk I am allergic to. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. GreatLakesGramma Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Yes it is, and they also put it in soy & rice cheese to make it melt like real cheese. So I can't eat them either. Not that I really want to anyway. I am not a cheese lover. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. Lewis
Planey Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 there is a compound in milk that damages the skin and causes wrinkling. No wonder babies are often little pink wrinkly things... Graeme Quote Graeme____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
GreatLakesGramma Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Not quite the same kind of wrinkle. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. Lewis
Beryl Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Hi, this is not a criticism of anyone, but perhaps you could call it just a sorting out of different phrases which I have learned over the years of study and teaching plant-based eating. There are different types of vegetarians, such as:- LACTO-OVO VEGETARIAN= one who abstains from all flesh foods, but includes eggs and dairy products in the diet. LACTO VEGETARIAN = one who abstains from all flesh foods and eggs, but includes dairy products in the diet TOTAL VEGETARIAN = one who abstains from all animal products. VEGAN = this name also has worship connotations, and should not describe a person who is a Total Vegetarian. I have certainly found that using the term "plant-based eating" or "plant-based cooking" is understood by the people, the general public, and does not link us to those who go by the name "Vegan", and who also often add in teachings other than food. Beryl Just a thought for you. Beryl Quote "Grace is God doing for us, in us and through us that which He requires of us but which is impossible for us to do in or for ourselves."Â But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Cor. 12:9.
Members phkrause Posted March 28, 2009 Members Posted March 28, 2009 Thank you Beryl. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Robert Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 There sure are a lot of carnivorous SDA's out there. More than when I joined in 1980. The problem for us seems to be avoiding dairy. So many SDA's tell me that they're vegetarians, while consuming milk and cheese like there's no tomorrow. We as a church are getting the dis-eases of the Egyptians because we eat like them. Ellen White said that we will have to discard dairy products. Are people waiting for God to write something on the wall like he did in Daniel's time? All right, here's the writing: http://notmilk.com/egw.html My grandfather was a SDA and a vegetarian, yet he had colon cancer, prostate cancer and finally liver cancer. Also, as my friend Jack points out, he knows of quite a few SDA who have followed the health message, but yet died way before their time. Why? They are too worried about what they eat and if they are doing all the things the law requires. In other words they have no "peace" or "assurance" and so they live this miserable existence in anxiety and worry. No wonder they end up with diseases anyway. Quote

There are leaders in the raw foods movement who are not Christians, some of whom don't seem to have any religious connection at all, who use the word "vegan" to describe their diet, "raw vegan" to be exact. GreatLakesGramma Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 There sure are a lot of carnivorous SDA's out there. The word "carnivorous" isn't really appropriate to describe people who eat meat. Carnivorous animals eat only animal flesh. Animals who eat flesh AND vegetation are called "omnivorous." Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. Lewis

Do they really follow the health message? Or do they only follow part of the health message? There is a lot more to health than just what we eat or how much water we drink. I ruined my health by stress, from overwork and overcommitment. It kills me when people tell me if I would follow such and such a diet (usually something extreme they don't follow themselves), I would cure my autoimmune disease. What I eat certainly does make a difference with my allergies, skin conditions, yeast issues, and digestive problems, but it doesn't make the slightest bit of difference to my immune system. For that, I must spend as much time as possible outdoors, get all the rest I need, avoid stress, and never, ever overdo anything. I discovered that strength training helps too, much more than I ever imagined it would. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. Members phkrause Posted March 28, 2009 Members Posted March 28, 2009 Don't forget dgrimm many non-smokers have died of lung cancer. They say second hand smoke is worse than actually smoking. As far as cancer or any other disease is concerned, there is always the exception to the rule. You can live the most healthful life and still die at an early age. You can live the most unhealthful life to be 100 years old. Like GLG has mentioned lots of things factor into how long we live or not. But for the most part if we eat as the Bible says we will live a good and healthy life. Has anybody read that article in National Geographic Magazine, were it showed that SDAs live at least another 7-10 years longer than most others? It was not just the food they ate but also there relationship with God, and also the there support system that they had with fellow church believers, there pray life. Unfortunately I don't have the magazine anymore to get some quotes from it. But I would imagine you could google it and get the article. It was very informative. I believe it was the February 2007 edition, its the one that I'm missing. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Guest Bruno Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Your genetic make up may have more to do with disease than anything else. As stated previously, there are those who smoke all their lives, and never get lung cancer, and those who never smoke die early of lung cancer. Your genetic's play a huge role in what diseases you are most suseptible to. All things in moderation. Quote
Members phkrause Posted March 28, 2009 Members Posted March 28, 2009 I agree with that Bruno. And I've heard people say, in that case I'll just eat and do whatever since I'm going to get such and such anyway. Pretty stupid way to deal with that. I think that I would eat and drink accordingly, and also in the way I live. Thanks for the imput. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

GreatLakesGramma Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 One of my friends (an ex SDA) pooh-poohed [the above] statement. They don't live longer, it just seems longer. Time seems to pass much more slowly when you're not having fun... Graeme That is total nonsense. You don't have to engage in health-destroying behavior or eat health-destroying food to enjoy life. I love nothing more than to go on a good long hike & take lots of pictures - a very health-promoting activity. And once you get rid of an appetite perverted by what is not really food, real, healthy food tastes better than junk food. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
