Steam rises from the dome of Redoubt Volcano in Alaska, as pictured during an August 13, 1990, survey flight.

On March 22, 2009, after almost two months of warning signs, Redoubt began erupting in earnest again. Scientists have so far logged five distinct eruptions.

One of the last usable images from a Webcam set up by the U.S. Geological Survey shows steam pouring from the summit of Redoubt Volcano on March 22, 2009. The eruption sent ash spewing high into the sky, but scientists at the Alaska Volcano Observatory said they are unsure exactly what knocked out the camera.

Ash nearly erases mountain peaks in the last Redoubt Volcano Webcam picture taken before the device died on March 23, 2009. The volcano had roared to life the day before and has so far seen five successive eruptions.
