Joe_in_RP Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Redirected from Sabbath elevator) Shabbat elevators Shabbat elevator switches A Shabbat elevator is an elevator which works in a special mode, stopping automatically on every floor, to allow for the Jewish law for abstaining from using electricity on Shabbat. An elevator may be marked with a sign noting that it is specially configured for Shabbat observance.[1] Shabbat elevators can be found in areas of large Jewish population in Israel, the United States and Argentina. They are typically found in big hotels, Israeli hospitals and other health institutions, high apartment buildings, and in some synagogues. In this mode, an elevator will stop automatically at every floor, allowing people to step in and out without having to press any buttons. Otherwise it is prohibited to use an elevator on Shabbat because pressing the button to operate the elevator closes a circuit, which violates the prohibition of activating electricity on Shabbat, and may also indirectly lead to "writing" of the new floor number in the display. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabbath_elevator Quote

aldona Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 I wonder if the Jewish people are reading articles about the systems put in place by some Adventist institutions/organizations to enable people to eat at restaurants and cafeterias on Sabbath without handling money, and still pay for their meal. Woody Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 Hey dgrimm. I am not so sure. Some churches are starting to accept Master Card for donations. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Amelia Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Seems to me just by using the elevator and making the doors close, floor numbers light up and the whole thing move, they are using electricity.
