Stan Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 How does slandering someone differ from 1st Amendment rights to publishing things? Where is that fine line? Or is there? Moderators Nan Posted March 26, 2009 Moderators Posted March 26, 2009 Sometimes I suspect the answer to a question like that may depend on the interpretation of a jury!! Quote
Administrators Gail Posted March 26, 2009 Administrators Posted March 26, 2009 Yep- this Freedom of the Press debate used to come up periodically also regarding the "Little Sisters" lesbian bookstore which was having their imported stuff seized at the border as obscene. Where do you draw the line between freedom and good taste? In the above example it is a line between freedom and whether one is using the freedom to promote hate. Does freedom mean that anything goes? Should it? Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Joe_in_RP Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 In Philippines if you are charged with libel they arrest you. Do you suppose the government wants to send a message to reporters? Quote
Dottie Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 My dad used to tell us that our freedom ends where the other fellow's nose begins. But that's not a legal definition. No matter what the USA constitution says, the words are defined by the people with long black robes who sit at a bench. And therefore, the words change their meanings with various decisions. Quote
