Poll: Facebook, MySpace, etc.

A couple of months ago, my son passed along a message to me from someone who used to be in my Sabbath School class but had recently moved away. I asked if he had been in touch by email, but he said this man is on Facebook. I was surprised, because this man is my age (mid-50s), and I had always thought of Facebook as a time-waster for kids and young adults. Son said "everybody is on Facebook, or MySpace." I said "I'm not. And I bet I could find several other people who aren't either."

So, it's time to find out. Let's find out how many here belong to one or more of them, or none at all. Also, feel free to post names of similar sites you belong to that we may not have heard of.

I'm on Facebook, but I don't have anything posted. It confuses me.

Poll only allows one choice. I'm mainly on Facebook but do have a Myspace page as well.

I like Facebook and have an account there. I've been able to get back in touch with former classmates of mine that I've not seen since I graduated highschool. Also several of my family have Facebook accounts and we connect that way as well. Overall I like it very well.

Bravus, I meant to cover your situation with "more than one". Did you notice it there? Was it not clear enough what it meant?

Most of the teens in my extended family are on one or both. I can't think of any adults who are on either. A couple friends are, but no family that I know of. I don't have any interest in it. Actually, I don't see the value in it, for me. For now, I'm sticking with my Christmas letter to keep in touch with people. But I'm open to being convinced!

My whole family are on Facebook and also or Myspace, one or the other.

And I have a very big family around Australia, so that is how we stay in touch.

I tried to vote in the poll, but it wouldn't let me.

I do have a Myspace account but haven't used it for months.

My daughter says that her American friends are more into Myspace, while it's Facebook for the Canadian ones.

I use Facebook extensively. Not only am I connected with extended family that way but also I've met new friends worldwide.

I have a group, too, and send out encouraging Bible messages weekly from there.

Since I joined about a month ago, Facebook has revolutionized my connectivity to old and new friends, and yes, most of my Facebook friends are in our 50s or better. I found a classmate from 4th grade in Brighton, Colorado, whom I haven't seen from that day to this. I resisted joining for a long time, but now am very glad I did. I enjoy Gail's weekly Bible messages, too.

The Facebook interface is a bit confusing, especially since they changed the look of the pages. They will likely be changing it again (if they have any sense), probably about the time we get to the point where we can't figure out why we ever had problems with it.

I've been on MySpace for years but never liked it, never did a thing with it except to use my account to access a friend's MySpace blog. Facebook's layout is unalterable, apparently, but you can play around with your MySpace pages and be creative (I haven't).

I do not have permission to vote in polls. However, I have had accounts at each of these places, as well as many other places on the Internet. Over time, I've realised the limitations of each and have narrowed my "membership" down to only Facebook; and with that, only family members in my "friends" list.

I'm on both. I am more active on myspace. I've been on facebook less than a year. I've connected with some people whom I prolly wouldn't know of on Myspace. Basically they both are a waste of time.

I actually joined Facebook last Saturday night, because my husband's brother's wife invited me to look at some pictures she had put there, and the only way I could do it was to join. Then the very next day, I got an email that my best friend, in Florida, had added me as a friend. Once I had those 2 connections, and the comments they had made at their own sites appeared on my home page, I began to see that it could be a good way to keep in touch with friends who don't live nearby any more, without having to write to all of them individually. I already have 15 Friends on Facebook.

I haven't a clue how to "get on" either of those places. The idea interests me, but I'm afraid I would spend too much time. My adult children have accounts, but I don't know on which place.

I am on facebook...and on it everyday! :) I love it! I just found a high school friend I use to hang out with that I've been trying to contact her in over a year! Finally found her! :) It's a great way to find long lost friends and friends to find you.

Liz, when you set up your facebook account, let me know..I'd be happy to add you on my friend's list! :)

Gail, it seems to me that the younger generation in the US use myspace, but the older ones, like me, are using facebook. I know more people using facebook in the US than myspace. The ones I know that are using myspace are younger ones. I do have a myspace page, but hardly even use it. I only check it once in a while.

Just recently joined Facebook, and ran into alot of all friends. And its pretty safe, you don't have to put up with anyone you don't want to. You don't have to see anything you don't want to either, like youtube.

To which, Denise, she'll find out who I am....So much for being incognito.....OOOOoooooh, well.....

Liz, let me know as well...

FYI, Gail, Lyndell, I gotcha beat...I have a friend/class mate from the THIRD grade, whom I graduated with, on facebook....And a good friend from the 6th grade...We have since reconnected and are keeping in touch...I think it's great...and prefer it to MySpace.....About the only think i like about MySpace, is when God promises that MySpace is reserved in heaven for Him and me! :-)

Good one!

I think I have you beat, Neil, in the oldest-friend contest you started, because when I talked about a friend going back to fourth grade, I was referring to the longest space of time during which I have not seen a person that I have now connected with on Facebook, and we were actually in third grade together also. The very longest-ago friend I have found on Facebook was in first grade with me in Alamosa, CO, in a one-room, seven-student SDA school that was about the size of a double garage. We ended up in academy together and have met at reunions also, so I didn't count him as being as long-lost a friend as the third/fourth grade classmate. (neener neener neener)

(I wonder if the above paragraph makes sense to anyone...)

On the other hand, if we are going to consider the actual passage of time, it will be easy for someone not of my tender years (ahem) to beat me in the old-friend department!
