Whitney donated her cherished collection of 350 dolls from countries all around the world to Coble. These are dolls she received as gifts or purchased during her travels. The dolls are on display for the children to enjoy in the school’s library. The theme of the library is “Children of the World,” and her dolls will be at home there.

She has specifically told the librarian that the dolls are to be touched; they are not “no touch” items. They are dressed in their native costumes and will be of interest when customs and lives of others around the world are studied.

Whitney has led an interesting life. She began mission service under the auspices of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in 1946. She graduated from the College of Medical Evangelists (now Loma Linda University) with her diploma in nursing in 1932. After graduation she stayed in Loma Linda and worked at the hospital there.

She had always had a deep desire to be a missionary to China. But the Lord had other plans for her, as her first mission assignment found her as the first and only nurse for more than a year serving at the newly constructed hospital in Montemorelos, Mexico.

Thus began a long and storied career in mission hospital nursing. For the next 30 years Whitney would devote her life to helping others less fortunate...
