Homes being refurbished by church volunteers

Several homeowners in Cleburne and one in Keene will soon see their homes improved thanks to the efforts of community volunteers.

The 10th annual Christmas in Action workday is Saturday. Volunteers will work on four Cleburne houses on Saturday and a Keene home on Sunday.

“On the average we usually have about 300 volunteers every year,” said Teresa Richardson, CIA secretary. “With the pretty weather expected this weekend, we’re hoping for even more.”

One change made in this year’s event is the shirts.

“We decided we’d try something different this year,” Richardson said. “We always appreciate the volunteers that come out every year and wear their shirts. This year we thought we’d give them a brand new one.”

The new shirts are camouflage and have a Bible verse and anniversary acknowledgement on the back.

Sunday’s project is 317 E. First St. in Keene. David Patterson and Jerry Becker are the house captains. Volunteers include the Place of Grace Sunday school class at Keene Adventist Church and members of Cleburne Seventh-day Adventist Church, as well as some of the students from Southwestern Adventist University and Keene ISD.

“All the homeowners are just thrilled and so excited that their houses are getting fixed up,” Richardson said. “We are revitalizing a lot of the neighborhoods and making it safer for them to live in.”
