Neil D Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 Baby Animals A one-month-old Chihuahua-Jack Russell cross could be a contender for the world's smallest living dog, according to the U.K.'s Daily Mail. Named Tom Thumb by his owners in the U.K., the petite pup weighs just a few ounces and measures less than four inches from the tip of his nose to the end of his tail. Tiny Tom Thumb was part of a five-pup litter but his siblings are reportedly three times his size. According to the Guinness World Records' Web site, the world's smallest living dog, Heaven Sent Brady, lives in Florida and is six inches long. Neil D Posted April 7, 2009 Author Posted April 7, 2009 Hubble Captures Stunning Views of the Universe This image provided by NASA shows the Cartwheel galaxy as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope and other space telescopes. About 100 million years ago, a smaller galaxy plunged through the heart of the Cartwheel galaxy, creating ripples of brief star formation. In this image, the first ripple appears as an ultraviolet-bright blue outer ring. The blue outer ring is so powerful that it indicates the Cartwheel is one of the most powerful UV-emitting galaxies in the nearby universe. Although astronomers have not identified exactly which galaxy collided with the Cartwheel, two of three candidate galaxies can be seen in this image to the bottom left of the ring, one as a neon blob and the other as a green spiral. Neil D Posted April 7, 2009 Author Posted April 7, 2009 Hubble Captures Stunning Views of the Universe Inside the Cocoon Nebula, seen here, is a newly developing cluster of stars. According to NASA, the nebula is nearly 15 light years wide and located about 4,000 light years away toward the northern constellation Cygnus. The soon-to-be-launched Kepler telescope, which is searching for Earth-like planets, will focus around the Cocoon Nebula's area of the Milky Way galaxy. The bright star near the center of this nebula is likely only a few hundred years old. Neil D Posted April 7, 2009 Author Posted April 7, 2009 Baby Animals A 15-inch-long whale shark, the size of a forearm, was rescued and released last week by activists in the waters off Pilar in eastern Philippines. The World Wide Fund for Nature called it "arguably the smallest living whale shark in recorded history." The group said the tiny whale shark was tied to a small rope on a beach and said the discovery is the first indication that the Philippines coastline may be their birthing ground. In this photo, biologist Embet holds the baby whale shark. (Elson Aca/Hand Out/WWF-Philippines/AP Photo) In case anyone is interested, a whale shark is one of the largest fish in the ocean. They open thier mouths and swim with mouths wide open. They can swallow a man quite easily if the whale sharks are large enough...Oh, they eat planton... Neil D Posted April 7, 2009 Author Posted April 7, 2009 Poof! Hollywood Disappears It seems that science is finally catching up with Hollywood. When researchers in California revealed over the weekend that they are one step closer to developing an "invisibility cloak," Hollywood sci-fi fans were heartened. In "Memoirs of an Invisible Man," a film based on a book by the same name, Chevy Chase plays a business man who is accidentally rendered invisible by an experiment gone awry.
