Woody Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 Yes ... he may be blind. He may not be the greatest Chaffeur. But he does know how to sniff out newly born bunnies. He raided a nest of bunnies and started eating on a few of them. Even though they weren't chocolate .... he did enjoy them. A blind puppy dog does need to have his entertainment. So, the next time I let him go outside ... I clearly told him not to eat any more bunnies. But sure enough ... he found himself some more. What do I do with him? He is being very disobedient? OR ... in the name of Easter ... should I just let him enjoy his wild bunnies. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Members phkrause Posted April 7, 2009 Members Posted April 7, 2009 Hey Redwood why not let him enjoy himself? If its good for you its good for him. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

Woody Posted April 7, 2009 Author Posted April 7, 2009 He has killed three so far. And I am not sure what to block off ... the bunnies are wild and I can't know of all their nest throughout the property. They are every where !!! Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Liz Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 Are these bunnies Cottentails or Jackrabbits? Any chance you could put a leash on him for a couple of weeks, until they are bigger and have a better chance of getting away? How about putting some bells on his collar so at least they can hear him coming? Quote For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? GreatLakesGramma Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 Teach him not to eat the bunnies. Don't let him go out without being leashed, then when he finds them, do whatever you normally to do teach him "no." Once he has stopped trying to catch them when he finds them, and you are sure he isn't going to do it again, then you can let him go free again, but keep an eye on him. Then if he catches another bunny & tries to eat it, then you would have to leash him and do it all over again. If you keep it up and be consistent, he will learn that "leaving bunnies alone = freedom", and "eating bunnies = loss of freedom." Woody Posted April 8, 2009 Author Posted April 8, 2009 Yes. Thanks for the great idea so far. Blanche and I have been going out with him. We yell when he tries to eat bunnies. And the nest that he attacked has three more babies. They are SO cute. But we are concerned because the Mother has not returned. Looks like we are going to have to feed them with an eye dropper. Woody Posted April 8, 2009 Author Posted April 8, 2009 Haven't seen her. Do rabbit mothers stick close or not? Please let me know quickly. Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted April 8, 2009 Members Posted April 8, 2009 Quote: Although rabbits build nests, they are not chickens and, after initial preparation, will not sit on their nests. They also do not stay on or by the nests after the babies are born. This would attract the attention of predators. Woody Posted April 8, 2009 Author Posted April 8, 2009 Thank you SO much Pam. This came in the nic of time. My wife was headed out the door to get the bunnies and I stopped her and showed the link you gave. She was convinced by it. Very Good help. Thanks. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. GreatLakesGramma Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 I'm glad Pam got to you in time. Unless you know for sure the mother is dead, it's best to leave wild animal babies alone. Woody Posted April 8, 2009 Author Posted April 8, 2009 Yes. Praise God that is what we did. IF Pam's message had come in one minute later .... it would have been too late. Kountzer Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 My neighbors to the back have a bunny pen up against their side of the back fence. The rabbits have dug at least 3 tunnels into our back yard. The rabbits hop around in our back yard on a regular basis. My old dog jumps up and chases them from time to time. He has killed 2 or 3. I feel bad about it, but the neighbors should keep their rabbaits in their own yard. DB Quote I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs. Frederick Douglass
Planey Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Redwood, let your dog emigrate Down Under. Here in Australia rabbits are considered a great pest. Any dog that does his part to help reduce the problem would be very welcome here. To reduce the number of rabbits (which were in plague proportions) they first introduced myxomatosis which did a great job for a while, then the little rodents became resistant and began to increase markedly again. The latest thing developed to control the pests is RCD (rabbit calicivirus disease) which seems to be doing a good job. So send your dog down here Redwood. As long as he's not a Republican of course. True-believer Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Hey All... Why is there a rabbit problem in Australia like Planey says in the above post? And also, China had a rabbit problem also...... That's why they built the great wall of China, to keep the rabbits out.... that's something Australia needs to do......
