Stan Posted April 9, 2009 Author Posted April 9, 2009 Reminds me of ghoti, or something similar to that can be prounced Fish.. When I type Potato in several programs with the British Canada dictionary it comes up with an error. Going to the Oxford American English dictionary. is well.... hmmm Reminds me of something I learned a couple of years ago 1,000,000,000,000 is a Trillion in North America but it is a Billion in England and Europe, which has a significant difference if you say there are Billionaires.. What we call a Billion they call a Hundred Thousand Million... a phrase we do not use Here is something from yahoo answers on this Quote If you receive benefit to being here please help out with expenses. https://www.paypal.me/clubadventist Administrator of a few websites like https://adventistdating.com

Administrators Gail Posted April 9, 2009 Administrators Posted April 9, 2009 Dawn Wells! It's MaryAnne from Gilligan's Island! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Members phkrause Posted April 9, 2009 Members Posted April 9, 2009 That's awesome pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Outta Here Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Quote: What we call a Billion they call a Hundred Thousand Million... a phrase we do not use Now there's something I never knew! Cool. Stan, can you point me to a good British dictionary online? All I can find are the ones where the phrases are slang and not always appropriate. I'd really like to have a link to a good site (for personal uses). The whole potato peeling thing would never have worked on Gilligan's Island. They didn't have an ice-chest! Quote
Members phkrause Posted April 9, 2009 Members Posted April 9, 2009 Yeah it took me a few minutes to figure out who she was. hahaha pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

Members phkrause Posted April 10, 2009 Members Posted April 10, 2009 I know but I had to look at her for awhile before I could actually say to myself, yeah that's her. But it did take me awhile to figure it out. lol pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
carolaa Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 If you want the potatoes cooked anyway, then that's a great way to do it. I'm embarrassed to say that I never thought of putting them in ice before I peeled them. It would go a lot faster that way than the way I do it - let them sit for 20-30 minutes. Or just go ouch, ouch, ouch! LOL But if you don't need them cooked, I think she could have had them peeled faster with a peeler. Quote
carolaa Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 On the other hand, if you hate peeling potatoes as much as I do, the extra time it takes is probably well worth it. And, I s'pose most of the time when we eat potatoes, we want them cooked. So - wow - a great tip! I may actually eat more potatoes now. Quote
GreatLakesGramma Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I eat the peels. Even when I make mashed potatoes, I mash the peels right in. Lewis
Moderators Gerr Posted April 10, 2009 Moderators Posted April 10, 2009 That's English for you. Very confusing for someone brought up in another language. Grammar rules have so many exceptions. And their wts and measure and monetary units! Ay yay yay!!! Quote
carolaa Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I eat the peels. Even when I make mashed potatoes, I mash the peels right in. Yeah, that's probably the best idea. Quote
Moderators Gerr Posted April 10, 2009 Moderators Posted April 10, 2009 Too much nutritional value is thrown away with the peel. Quote
GreatLakesGramma Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 The peels themselves are indigestible. But I've read that the most nutritious part is just under the peel. When you peel before cooking, you remove that part, but when you cook and then peel, you keep it. But just eating the peels is easier. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. Cosmin M. Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I knew this for a long time. But I never put it in water. I just took it out with my tongs and peeled the skin off. No, I did not get burned. Quote
Moderators Gerr Posted April 10, 2009 Moderators Posted April 10, 2009 Used your tongs? Hmmmmmmmm. I wonder what your tongs look like! Quote
