If someone still has a jar of them at home, and brings them in to the bank, the bank will still recognize them and can change them into more up-to-date currency or add them to your bank balance. I occasionally see a few floating around. As for 5 cent coins - I have a money box, like one of those "charity tins" that collectors rattle in the street, sitting on the shelf at home, and every week or two I go through my purse and cull out the 5-cent shrapnel which just takes up space. It took me about 3-4 years to fill the last one, which went to ADRA and contained about $80 when it was full. I have just started the new one, which is marked for ICC (International Children's Care). International Children's Care (taking the opportunity to put in a free plug for one of my favourite charities - and I'm naturally biased because my brother and sister-in-law are involved with this one." One time I went through my purse and fished out all of the 5c coins and put them in the charity box - and it came to exactly $1 that week. The following day, I was walking along the shopping mall and there was a bright shiny $1 coin lying on the ground.
