Deliver me from crockpots.

The following is based on an article in the DAILY CAMERA (a newspaper of Boulder County) written by Christine Reid, and dated January 15, 2005.

The previous Monday John Didomenico, of Boulder County, Colorado noted a strange looking crockpot sitting near his driveway. He noted that it was taped in a manner that no one could determine the contents, if any. As he considerd this, he wondered if it had been associated with a meth lab, or if it was some other diabolical device. So, he called the police.

A local Bounder County Sheriff carefully removed a small portion of the tape to take a peek inside. It appeared to him that the inside contained an unidentified substance, and condensate. So, he requested help from the Fire Department.

They came out, suited up in gas masks, and other protective gear, examined the pot, and called the hazardous materials team.

Three hours later the crock pot was placed in a "safe container" and taken away for further testing. After it was determnied to be harmless, it was placed in a local Dumpster.

The total cost to the taxpayers of Boulder County has come to $1,500.00. But, at least Boulder County residents are assured that they will be kept safe from dangerous crockpots.

NOTE: While the above is based upon the news article, the above is my version, and that is not exactly as written in the newspaper.

So, as curious as a cat, I wonder what was inside the pot?

Well, there was a metal plate that was there to help keep food from burning.

Maybe someone was placing several things in their car before leaving for church, and placed the crock pot containing stew on top of the car, then forgot about it and drove off. I have at times taped down the lid to some dish so it would not come ajar and allow the contents to spill in the car.

Seems to me though that falling off a car would crack the crockpot, producing a cracked crockpot. I would prefer to be delivered from crackpots rather than from crockpots, personally. Then again, the crockpot may have just been crazed--and I am sure you can continue the thought.

A very similar news story surfaced in St. Louis last year. Appears there had been a bottle of mysterious orange liquid found in a parking lot downtown.

The bomb squad had been notified and taken the matter into its hands. After carefully removing the bottle from the parking lot and taking necessary precautions to identify its contents, it was discovered that it had contained orange soda.

Money well spent!

Shortly after the "9/11" events, someone came to our front door around 3 AM on a Sabbath, knocked loudly, and then a vehicle took off from where it was stopped by the side of the road in front of our house. As I was having a mostly sleepless night, I was on the couch and heard everything, and was the only one disturbed by their intrusion. I didn't go to the outer door of our enclosed front porch, but I did look out the window of the inside door, where I could remain unseen, to see if anyone was there.

Some time later, they returned, pounded on the door again, and again took off in their truck. This time I turned all the outside lights on and looked out the windows all the way around the house. Seeing no one, and no evidence of any activity, I decided to go out into the porch and look out the door's window. There was a very large box, crudely duct taped shut, on the doorstep.

I woke my husband and asked him if he was expecting anyone to leave anything for him. This looked like an auto body part box, which it was, and he does body work, so it occured to me that someone he knew might be leaving something for him, and was only able to come by in the night, though I didn't think that to be too likely, considering their behavior. He wasn't expecting anything, and proceeded to go look at the box through the door himself, while I called the police. They advised us to stay away from the box, but watch from a distance to see if anything came out of it, and call them back if anything did.

We got dressed while we waited, and soon a police officer arrived. He very carefully approached the box, moved just a small part of a flap on it, and looked inside. Anyone want to guess what he saw?

And I am not making this up, in case anyone is wondering. This really happened to us.

It was 5 large, adult domestic geese.

I don't know if the owners were tired of the mess they make or if someone stole them. Either way, I'm pretty sure the people who left them there were drunk. We never heard from the police that anyone reported any stolen or missing.
