SDA named new secretary of the Ministry of Health, Solomon Islands

THE Government has fired the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health Dr George Malefoasi.

This happened last week.

Dr Lester Ross is now the new Permanent Secretary.

Government sources said Dr Malefoasi received his termination letter just before the Easter break.

No immediate reasons were given for the termination.

Secretary to Cabinet Ruth Liloqula yesterday confirmed the sacking, but declined to provide reasons for the action.

"I'm not at liberty to reveal reasons in such cases which might tarnish the reputation of the person concern," she said.

Ms Liloqulo added permanent secretaries are politically appointed by the Prime Minister’s Office and they be terminated at any time.

She also confirmed the appointment of Dr Ross as the new permanent secretary.

Dr Ross and his family arrived from PNG on Sunday.

He was busy completing formalities and paper work relating to his new appointment yesterday.

Dr Ross, from Western Province, was a former Permanent Secretary and Medical Superintendant at the National Referral Hospital.

He left in 2002 to lecture at the Fiji School of Medicine.

From Fiji, he was appointed Health Director for the Trans Pacific Union (TPU) of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) based in Fiji.

Last year he transferred to Pacific Adventist University (PAU) in Papua New Guinea and was appointed Dean of the School of Health Science for the last 14 months until his appointment.

It is interesting that so far we have heard very little about Johnson Toribiong becoming the President of the Republic of Palau (in the West Caroline Islands) in January of this year. He was inaugurated on a Thursday and the following Sabbath not only was he teaching his Sabbath School class in the Koror Church but translated for my brother during the church service. President Toribiong had been one of his students at Palau Academy back in the '60s. Information has been sent to "the brethren" together with photos of the occasion.. We hope to see an article in the Review very soon.

It was interesting that the "Permanent" Secretary can be fired at any time, with no reason.. Guess "permanent" doesn't mean the same thing there!
