Facing an economic downturn and the decline of the U.S. dollar, the Seventh-day Adventist Church has announced a hiring freeze at its Silver Spring world headquarters as well as a 20 percent travel expense reduction for its employees.

The hiring freeze saved the church $1.6 million and travel reduction measures saved $1.4 million, according to an April 7 article in the Adventist News Network, the church's official news agency. While the church recently hired a new general counsel, 20 nonessential positions at the world headquarters will not be filled as a result of the hiring freeze, said church spokesman Ansel Oliver. The Silver Spring office employs 820 people, he said.

The travel reductions will affect the church's outreach efforts overseas, particularly for health training, women's empowerment programs and ministerial training, Oliver said. The church will not be able to send as many employees to overseas destinations to help with these programs, he said.

All 20 positions in the hiring freeze affect the world headquarters in the Silver Spring office. Other departments in the office, including the church's North American headquarters, will not be affected by the freeze.

Oliver said national economic woes combined with global economic conditions have resulted in less money coming to the church.

"We are cutting back a bit. … We are on the weaker end of a strong dollar," Oliver said. "Some of the decrease is tied to [donations]."

Funny thing that they are announcing that now, I knew that at least a year ago when I applied for work at the R&H, PPPA, and the AMC. They all sent me emails stating that.
