Local Dr Assists Mission Outreach in Kenya

Dr. Gordon Guild, of Tecumseh, has participated in medical mission trips before, traveling to the Philippines, the Dominican Republic and Honduras, but from March 11-29, he journeyed much farther. Dr. Guild was part of a team of physicians and dentists to set up clinics in Kenya, Africa, and he said it was an experience he won’t soon forget.

“The Maasai people were just lovely and very friendly,” he said. “Mothers would bring their babies and they were just so grateful.”

The trip was part of a Maasai Development Project coordinated through the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Kim DeWitt, of Owosso, was a missionary wife and lived among the Maasai people for several years and knows the language, Dr. Guild said. He said Dr. Phil Wolfe, from Owosso, the son of former Tecumseh dentist Dr. Jerry Wolfe, and his wife and partner also went on the trip, in addition to a physician from South Bend, two from California, and several students majoring in nursing and social work.

Dr. Guild said that DeWitt contacts several of 40 lay pastors and literacy coordinators living in Kenya, telling them when they will be having the mobile clinics. The pastors, in turn, get the word out to the Maasai people, who will line up for hours to be seen. The pastors also stand by to interpret for the people during examination and treatment. The people often have parasites, and animal diseases such as anthrax and brucellosis, which could be treated with the medicine the team brought. Dr. Guild said he saw several children with ruptured eardrums, eye infections and multiple ailments.
