Administrators Gail Posted April 23, 2009 Administrators Posted April 23, 2009 Psalm 42:5: "Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him For the help of His countenance." The NASB translates the last word as "presence". BUT- When I checked other translations I got a surprise! Let me know what you think... :) Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted April 23, 2009 Members Posted April 23, 2009 NIV Psalms 42:5: "Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, For I will yet praise Him my Savior and my God." Completely different ending in the NIV.....yet not so different... Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
Moderators John317 Posted April 23, 2009 Moderators Posted April 23, 2009 The word literally means "to turn," and refers to someone's face. It is used of a person's presence in Gen. 3: 8; 1 Sam 16: 8; and 2 Sam. 2: 14; and of a human face in Gen. 38: 15. It refers to the blade of an axe in Ecc. 10: 10. The correct translation of the Hebrew in the last line of Ps. 42: 5 is, "as the triumph of His presence" or "the salvation of His face." The Greek translation has, "He is the salvation of my countenance," "my" being an error. Many modern translations read, "my salvation and my God," on the basis of the refrain found in 42: 11 and 43: 5. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Administrators Gail Posted April 23, 2009 Author Administrators Posted April 23, 2009 Yes, I have seen the word, "salvation" used. But "my Saviour and my God" leaves out the idea of God's presence OR His countenance. And yet there are many translations that have it this way, even my French one. Was just curious... Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Outta Here Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Strong's concordance reads (the stuff in read looks differently in the concordance, but will not copy correctly here): H6440 פּנים pânîym paw-neem' Plural (but always used as a singular) of an unused noun (פּנה pâneh, paw-neh'; from 6437); the face (as the part that turns); used in a great variety of applications (literally and figuratively); also (with prepositional prefix) as a preposition (before, etc.): - + accept, a (be-) fore (-time), against, anger, X as (long as), at, + battle, + because (of), + beseech, countenance, edge, + employ, endure, + enquire, face, favour, fear of, for, forefront (-part), form (-er time, -ward), from, front, heaviness, X him (-self), + honourable, + impudent, + in, it, look [-eth] (-s), X me, + meet, X more than, mouth, of, off, (of) old (time), X on, open, + out of, over against, the partial, person, + please, presence, prospect, was purposed, by reason, of, + regard, right forth, + serve, X shewbread, sight, state, straight, + street, X thee, X them (-selves), through (+ -out), till, time (-s) past, (un-) to (-ward), + upon, upside (+ down), with (-in, + stand), X ye, X you.
