Edward Waters College is getting some star power for its original play written by a professor.

Clifton Davis, star of such sitcom as "Amen" and "That's My Mama," will play the lead role in "By Reason of Insanity," written by Gary Flanigan, chair of the communications department at EWC.

The show is at 8 p.m. Friday April 24 and 2 p.m. Sunday April 26 at The Ritz Theatre at 829 N Davis St. Tickets cost $21.50.

"By Reason of Insanity" takes place in a courtroom as the characters try to figure out if a man killed himself or if his death was a tragic accident.

Several Jacksonville leaders star in the play, including James Washburn, EWC's vice president for business and finance, Derri Kay Lassiter Young, managing partner for The Lassiter Law Firm and EWC senior class president Reylius Thompson.

Davis is a longtime friend of EWC, having spoke at the school's commencement ceremony last spring. That's because Davis is the former director of institutional advancement at Elizabeth City State University, a fellow historically black college.

Before he made a name as an actor, Davis penned The Jackson 5's No. 2 hit, "Never Can Say Goodbye." He also is ordained as a Seventh-Day Adventist Church minister.

Davis will also conduct a free one-day fine arts institute "lyceum series" workshop at EWC on Friday. The activities begin at 9 a.m. and feature a number of workshops about how to make it in show business. For more information, call Karen Smith at EWC at (904) 470-8255.

I didn't know he wrote 'Never Can Say Goodbye'

I've been hearing for awhile that Mr. Davis does not identify himself with sda anymore.

I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs.

I've been hearing for awhile that Mr. Davis does not identify himself with sda anymore.

He used to be an associate pastor at the Loma Linda University Church. He gave pretty good sermons.

As far as I know he still is an SDA. He appears often on TBN. You wouldn't know he's SDA by anything he says on it.

I heard him say once that he wrote a number of songs that began hits.

I hope he doesn't lose his way.

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

I 'guess' you're right. I suppose we could say that about anyone.

May we be one so that the world may be won.
