Several residences at a Calimesa mobile home park got a dose of spring cleaning on Friday, courtesy of about 25 teenagers.

The students from Mesa Grande Academy in Calimesa did mainly yardwork. For two hours, they trimmed and shaped bushes and trees, pulled weeds and raked. Some of them also cleaned out a shed.

The students were fulfilling a graduation requirement that they complete 25 hours of community service a year.

"It makes me feel really good doing community service," said 16-year-old Philip Hoch. "And it's fun."

Students from the Seventh-day Adventist school have been helping out at this particular mobile home park, Villa Calimesa, for three years. In addition to yardwork, they've washed cars and cleaned.

"We've put in yards of gravel," said Judie Yakush, development director at Mesa Grande Academy.

Sophomore Melissa Castillo, 16, said her favorite task is weeding.

"It's actually kind of fun," she said.
