Swine flu outbreak in Mexico and spreading

We just got back from Mexico today. We were framing a roof on a church there. There were some government officials at the bridge, on the Mexican side, wearing masks. Those actually checking the cars were not. That was a little spooky.

The government is not discouraging travel to Mexico yet but is advising those that go to wash their hands frequently. They do not know how it is spreading or how contagious it is. Those getting sick and returning to the US are responding well to anti-viral medicine.

We live so close to Mexico I don't know how much difference it really makes just crossing the river. Hundreds of people cross back and forth in our county every day. If there is a break out in one of the cities across the river from us I don't see how they could stop it from spreading over.

Does anyone know which resorts and which town the tourist were at who got sick?

I have read that tourists from Cancun got sick. Mexico City is the center of the epidemic. Here is a map for those not familiar with Mexico.

I live just on the other side of the river from Matamoros. Cancun is way down on the Yuctan Peninsula jutting out into the Atlantic which forms the Gulf of Mexico. Mexico City is just a little south of where the middle of Mexico would be. I was searching Spanish news sites and can't find where there are other break-outs but find news where health officials all over Mexico are out in full force.

Immediately across the river from me is Tamaulipas but the border with Nuevo Leon is just a few miles away.

Don't know why the map disappeared. Maybe because it was a .gif file. Here is a .jpeg although I liked the other better. We live about 20 miles up the border from Brownsville.

If you look all the way down in the lower right hand corner of the map you will see the city of San Salvador in the country of El Salvador. That is where I met my wife on a Maranatha Volunteers International trip.

Reports today say that 1 in 3 sick in the U.S. have direct connections with Mexico. A school here in Oregon had a group on a trip in Mexico. They came home as soon as the first reports of flu started coming in. Even if none of the students felt symptoms they could be carrying. One of our colleges had a student get sick and they closed. Also, the CDC has looked into the deaths in Mexico and says that only 9 of those actually had swine flu.

Asian swine flu, mexican swine flu, Avian bird flu and human flu. It is as if someone designed a type-A flu virus specifically for the job of fast adoption into the human pool without current vaccine available. Making it out of an unlikely combination of swine flue and Avian flu base creates a very odd result.

And remember folks -- we are NOT in flu season! Our not-flu season of swine flu will be followed by the "summer of no swine flu vaccine not-flu season" to then be topped off by "the real flu season of swine flu plus normal flu".

So those people dancing on the grave of swine flu BEFORE the flu season gets started and before our summer-of-no-vaccine gets underway are singing a premature victory song.

Hmm.... I've heard that, too. Is that a rumour or do we know for sure it's a fact? I haven't been following the news.

But you're right, Gail, I have heard people (outside CA) who claim this is not only a man-made virus but also include a conspiracy theory with it.
