I am gradually turning vegetarian... but I went over to my neigbor's place for tea tonight and she made me rump steak and vegies. I couldn't refuse, it was too tempting...... I have only been a vegetarian now since the beginning of this year. But if people give me meat, especially steak---I will eat it because it is so tempting and so delicious----mmmmmm....yum, yum. True-believer Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I'm so glad we're not judged by God with the certain foods that we eat... if we were... then I better stop falling in temptation whenever scrumptious yummy rump steak comes my way..... I only eat meat if I am with friends that eat meat or with my family.... But I don't buy meat in my own house... I don't touch or eat the stuff in my place... I prefer the vegetarian meat. Quote Luke 4:19To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
Members phkrause Posted May 1, 2009 Members Posted May 1, 2009 TB, eventually you will not crave meat. I also was not a vegetarian growing up. But we did eat kosher. My father worked as a butcher in a factory in the Bronx, and brought home the best stuff. But as the years went bye I got to eating hamburgers. And they were the hardest to let go. Every time I'd pass a wendy's or burger king I'd want one. But now I just drive by with no craving. It took awhile. I still eat fish, chicken and turkey every once in awhile, but no red meat anymore. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
GreatLakesGramma Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I quit meat cold turkey, & never ate a single bite of it from that day. It was easy for me, because my circumstances were different than most people's. I had a terrible headache that never went away, just varied in intensity. I was taking the maximum dosage of the most powerful non-narcotic prescription headache drug of that time, which reduced the pain to a level that I could manage to function with, but only for half the time, because it would wear off hours before I could take another dose. Then I could only sit, as still as I could manage, with my head pounding, watching the clock, waiting until I could take some more. No tests showed anything wrong. My doctor concluded it was nervous tension, simply because I was a college student, but my college years were the most non-stressful time of my life up to that point. I was far away from my verbally-abusive mother, living in peace for the first time in my life, doing what I loved most - learning new things. I knew it wasn't stress, but he couldn't find any explanation, so he wouldn't do anything more for me. The wife of the pastor who baptized me gave me the book "The Story of Our Health Message." Some of the people the book told about had the same problems I had, so I decided to try a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet. In two weeks, the headache was completely gone, and has never troubled me again. That was 32 years ago. Have I been tempted? Not really. I do not ever want to live with that again. I would rather go hungry - it isn't nearly as painful. Maybe this personal story might motivate you further. We lived in central Calif for almost a decade. I worked with a SDA medical group. Most if not all of our patients knew that we were vegetarians because we held health seminars in our office. Not very strict vegetarians because to this day I occasionally eat fish when we go out. Anyway, one day one of our patients asked me if I could show/teach him how to be a vegetarian. I was rather surprised because he was a butcher in a nearby abbatoir. So I asked him why. He said he was often called in during the weekend to butcher cows that would otherwise not make it through the weekend. I asked him, "Do you mean that meat from diseased cows are sold for consumption?" I was shocked by his reply. All they had to do, he said, was to cut out the diseased portion and the rest could be even sold as "Grade A" beef!!! A friend told me a similar story about chickens. One summer several of us students sold books as colporteurs. I roomed with a friend who had worked in a chicken farm. He said sick chickens were not discarded. They were dressed and sold usually to roadside restaurants! To this day I could probably count on the fingers of one hand the number times I've eaten beef or chicken. Quote
GreatLakesGramma Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Very true. I remember only once during my early years on a dairy farm when my dad buried a dead cow. It died of lockjaw. All other sick animals were examined & passed by the vet, then sold for beef. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26.
