We just bought a new lawn mower. Since Blanche has to use it ... we bought a good 'self propelled' mower. A John Deer . Paid $500.

Anyways ... we bought it six days ago. And of course we paid for it with Master Card at Lowes.

The very first time Blanche cranked it up and used it ... well within one minute she hit a rock in the grass and bent the crank shaft.

Took it to the John Deer dealer who said it would require a new engine for a cost of $475 . ($25 less than a new one) And ... the warrenty would not cover it because we damaged it.

Went to Lowes and cried and boo whooed but to no avail. They said 'tough luck'.

I got to thinkin' I would call Master Card and see what they could do. I discovered they have a benefit that if you lose or break something within 90 days of purchase ... they will refund or repair it. EVEN lawn mowers.

Seriously though, I am glad that they will fix it for you. Nothing is more irritating than breaking something right after you buy it.

My secretary made a mistake once and ended up writing her check for her credit card payment fourteen cents too short. That error of hers ended up costing her nearly $30. Yes, because she shorted them fourteen cents. She cought it the day her payment was due (she had already mailed the check) She called to see if she could pay the fourteen cents over the phone or online and the credit card company said no.

Credit card companies make their money off from interests, dues and penalties. They are not a group of nice people looking to lend a helping hand. They issue cards in hopes that the card holders will make mistakes so they can be charged extra interest, fees and penalties. Why would anyone want to do business with people like that?

I do not have a credit card because I refuse to pay a credit card company one penny in interest, dues, fees or penalties. I do, however, own stock in a credit card company they pay me dividends. That is the relationship I like.

Yeah, I know about the penalties for late and partial payments. I've learned the lesson and pay it all monthly. I hate being in debt.

Whether or not a credit card insures purchases or not depends on the issuer, not whether it's Mastercard or Visa. Discover used to do it, but they don't any more.

I won't use a debit card, because they aren't as safe. If someone gets hold of your number, they can clean you out, and you are out of luck. Period. With credit cards, there is a limit to how much you are liable for.

I have a Visa card with a cash back bonus. I use it for everything, including groceries. And I pay the full balance every month. To make sure there are never any late fees or penalties, I have it set up for automatic payment, one week before the due date. If it weren't for all of that, I would just use cash only, except for online purchases, of course.

I used to always have Visa . But I switched to MasterCard. Visa does not have the benefit that I described in the Original Post. If I had used Visa to pay for my John Deer. I would have been dearly disappointed. And $500 poorer.

I don't believe that debit cards have the same benefits as credit cards. But like GLG said ... it does depend upon the issuer. However .... I've never heard of a Visa that will allow for you to return a broken or lost purchase within 90 days. To my knowledge ... this is only a MasterCard benefit.

Yes, if you can learn not to make mistakes .... the credit card will pay you hundreds of dollars in airline tickets or gift cards. I prefer the gift cards myself. But I get so many hundreds of dollars with of benefits ... that it FAR pays for any mistakes that might require fees for.

That is easy to get around by using a pre-paid debit card. One only loads the funds on it they are going to need for the purchases they need to use it for. That way the balance is always low. Or, if not a prepaid debit card, open a second checking account for debit card use only. Keep a low balance in it. Transfer the funds into as needed.

The only time I have a high balance in my debit card account is the first few days after pay day. That is only because I write out checks for some bills and the balance is there until the checks clear.

We don't need credit cards. I don't know why people like to borrow money from companies just waiting to "get" them. Credit card companies are not good people.

They offer those things so that you will use the card more, in hopes that you will slip up and charge up a balance you can't pay in full.

I am a little upset with Bank of America because in my last statement ... they reduced my credit line by $13,000. When I called and asked why ... they stated it was because I had not been using the credit I had. Duh ...

I would like to report that I was blessed by another brother in Christ ... when my neighbor came over and mowed our lawn because he had heard through the grapevine about what had happened. What is selfless about it is that he didn't have time to do his own lawn ... so ours looks super and his looks terrible.
