On May 10, 2008, the devastating tornado that rocked Newton County also hit a local church, Neosho-Granby Seventh Day Adventist Church, located on U.S. 60, 1/4 mile east of Missouri Highway 59 (old 71).

On Saturday, the congregation, along with community and others, dedicated a new reconstructed church.

The original church building was built in 1975. Prior to that, the congregation met in Neosho.

The church’s pastor, Dwight Seek, remembers that day.

“It was about 6 o’clock on May 10, 2008, we were at our home in our basement in Diamond,” Seek said. “After the storm passed, I got a call from one of our church members saying ‘the church is gone, there is nothing left.’ So we came down and took a look at it and sure enough, there was nothing but the basement left, the floor was left, and there was one stool left sitting and four pews sitting there. The walls were gone, everything was just in one heap of rubble.”
