Dr. Shane Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Some fat people are fat just because they are married to good cooks. I bet they could drop a ton of weight just by getting a divorce. In our house we can really pack the calories on if we don't watch it. Both my wife and I worked our way through school as cooks. Oh my, my! Breakfasts can easily turn into feasts at our house be it pancakes, waffles with scrabbled eggs, whole wheat toast, fried plantain bananas, omelets, fresh fruit, cottage cheese, yogurt, smoothies and so forth. And dinners can be even worse. Pasta dishes like lasagna, spaghetti with fried tofu or ravioli. Mexican food has no end with taquitos, brown rice, refried beans, corn tortillas, avocado, sour cream, enchiladas, tamales and empanadas. I think I could stuff myself to death eating haystacks. Then there is stir fries with oriental pasta. A simple lentil soup and tomato/lettuce/avocado can easily get our of control too. Grilled vegetables in pita bread isn't going to slow things down either. There are stuffed peppers served with mashed potatoes and baked beans. And home-made pizza with a whole wheat crust - black olives and pineapple. Oh my,,, throw away the scale. Now let's not even get into desserts and baked goods. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... GreatLakesGramma Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 So Shane, do you and your wife and children have weight troubles? Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Dr. Shane Posted May 5, 2009 Author Posted May 5, 2009 No, we chew on wood. lol A couple of years ago both my wife and I went on diets and we each lost 35 lbs to achieve our "ideal" weight. Since then we have switched to a low-fat, high fiber diet. However limiting the amount we can eat can be tough sometimes (thus chewing on wood). This evening, for example, my wife made a great meal and after eating one plate full I wanted another but... I know better than to go there. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... GreatLakesGramma Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Try this - take small bites and chew every bite until there is almost nothing left. The main satisfaction of eating good-tasting food is in the mouth. So the longer it stays there, the greater the satisfaction. Then you won't feel as much desire for more. It's actually a good practise to follow with everything we eat, because digestion begins in the mouth. If we do not chew our food thoroughly, it won't digest properly. When I was working on losing weight a few years ago, I actually continued to lose during the Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays, because I did that with desserts. When I had dessert, I had only a small amount, but eating it that way, slowly and savoring every bit of flavor I could get out of it, made me feel like I was indulging in great luxury. I took longer to eat my little half piece of pie than everyone else took to eat 2 or more pieces. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted May 7, 2009 Moderators Posted May 7, 2009 So have you retained your lower weight? Just today I read about Kirstie Alley having REGAINED 83 pounds -- right after her famous public weight loss diet by the use of [-- can't think of the brand name --] on which she had LOST a lot of weight. So it shows she had not changed her eating habits, and the weight came right back. Quote Jeannie

...Change is inevitable; growth is optional....
Dr. Shane Posted May 7, 2009 Author Posted May 7, 2009 Kirstie Alley not only didn't change her eating habits but she stopped exercising. I heard her say she moved all her exercise equipment out and turned that room into a dining room. - - Not a good sign - - I guess she is dieting again. My wife and I are dieting again but this time it is to lose a few pounds. We weigh ourselves about once a week and if we have gained more than 5 pounds above where we want to be it triggers a diet. It is hard for me to do because the Army got me in the habit of eating fast. But I do try to slow down. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Dr. Shane Posted May 7, 2009 Author Posted May 7, 2009 I am sure we will be back to our ideal weight in two or three days. Weighing ourselves often keeps us from getting too far away from our ideal. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
Administrators Gail Posted May 7, 2009 Administrators Posted May 7, 2009 I know many people in the same position... I worry about Diet Coke drinkers. I've heard that it facilitates weight gain. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Gail Posted May 7, 2009 Administrators Posted May 7, 2009 I found that with me I lose weight easily when/if I skip a meal. I never thought that I could fast at all because I tend to get woozy. But if I am not having to do a lot of physical activity and am able to sit and read, I can get by with less every now and again. I like how I feel when I do a fast like this now and again. I am very happy with my current weight! Right now I'm taking a supplement that is like a vitamin pill with anti-oxidants, omega 3, cleanser, etc. which I use once a day instead of breakfast. I'm feeling more perky with that and only 240 calories. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Members phkrause Posted May 7, 2009 Members Posted May 7, 2009 I have heard that this is not a good way or indicator of weight gain or loss. Because if you are exercising and loosing fat, and its being replaced with muscle, you could be gaining weight. Because muscle weighs more than fat. Have you ever watched that show on 3ABN called "Body & Spirit" he talks about that all the time. Anyway if this works for you great. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Dr. Shane Posted May 7, 2009 Author Posted May 7, 2009 I worry about Diet Coke drinkers. I've heard that it facilitates weight gain. It is a myth. It started when soda pop companies started using NutraSweet instead of saccharin. Now most of them are using Splenda. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor...
