This unusual sculpture has appeared outside the SeventhDay Adventist Church in Invercargill and we're curious what it means.

The sculpture is a collection of old televisions, computer monitors, corrugated iron, bicycle frames, wheel rims and other old rusty junk stacked up high with a large "R.I.P" sign in front.

Calls to the church about the installation yesterday were unsuccessful.

Invercargill City Council general inspector for environmental health Robert Bird said he knew nothing of the sculpture and had not received any calls about it from members of the public.

If you know what the sculpture represents we would like to know. Send your answers to news@stl.co.nz

That's a no-brainer. It's stuff that they decided was non-recyclable.

Recycling is an art at Invercargill's Seventh-day Adventist Christian School.

Its year 3 to 8 pupils have constructed an interesting "junk tower", which is displayed in Bainfield Rd near the school's entrance.

The 3m-high tower, made up of old lawnmowers, computers, a television, bicycles and other scrap metal, has a large sign in front of it displaying the letters "R.I.P."

Senior teacher Meg Harebottle said the idea for the tower came after the pupils studied recycling as a social studies topic.

The pupils explored different ways junk could be reused, leading them to their artistic interpretation.

Working together, the pupils came up with a design and name for the tower, she said.

The project combined elements of engineering design, as the pupils had to play around with models first on how best to construct the sculpture to ensure its stability as well as its visual effect.

It had been a fun and interesting project, Mrs Harebottle said. "And it had showed them you can make something beautiful out of something ugly."

The pupils said it took them two weeks' of planning and collecting junk and just two hours to make.

The "R.I.P" has a double meaning. Rather than being morbid, it alludes to the junks rebirth and actually stands for Recycling In Poetry, they said.

Class captain Dawn Richards said the class hoped it had taught the community about the importance of recycling.

The tower will be dismantled in a couple of weeks, Mrs Harebottle said.

And recycled? Here we would be able to recycle the metal.

I got a message from someone living in NZ who looked into it and said the sculpture is already down and that it was an advertisement and it wasn't related in any way to the SDA church.

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Was the reporter lying?
