Are you sure that you are not putting words in Amellia mouth???

Whenever someone has done that with me, the words always tasted funny........

Amelia was talking about parakeets, aka 'keets'.

PS: "Looking for a name for the new Capital City of the Country of Adventistan"

Stan, How about Lesterville?

She was talking about parakeets. My mom found one in her yard. We found out it is a male, however, this one is mean and bites. Any further tips on how to get him to stop biting?

I looked at this picture and in mind said "Budgies!" and indeed they are budgerigars. Now I knew budgies are e type of parakeet but in Australia they are always called budgerigars and not parakeets.

So I researched and discovered that there are two types of budgies kept by aviculturists which have resulted from selective breeding. The larger variety is known as an English budgerigar and the (significantly) smaller variety is known as the American parakeet. (hence Amelia's reference to 'parakeets')

Now when you realise that budgerigars are native to Australia and only Australia you wonder how thw two main varieties could end up with names like English and American. I mean, really. Sigh.

By thr way, there is an Australian term budgie smugglers which has nothing to do with illegal bird exporters but refers to an article of clothing. Hmmm.

Many reasons why he is biting Liz. He could have been flying free for quite some time. Which would be a miracle for him because loose pet birds are usually quickly picked off as prey by hawks. He could have been a caged bird left alone alot and never handled. He is probably an older bird too. Babies don't bite, but they will hold onto and nibble fingers and things. A bids way of touching. Take a look at the toenails and see how long they are. Are any torn or do they look clipped. How about the wings? Gently pull one open and look for missing or cut feathers. Is he banded? Are his eyes totally black or does he have white showing?

Hand taming is something that has to be done every day. Doe he easily step up onto a proffered finger? Or does he shy away and try to bite? If so then you need to start with stick training. A bird will usually step up onto a proffered stick right away. I use a cage perch dowell as a training stick. Whenever the 'keet starts to bite, move him away and say "no biting". It will take time.

Thanks Amelia. I think he is an older bird, he has that white ring around his eyes, his toenails look in good shape, as does all of his feathers--none are clipped, and he has no band on his legs. I am guessing that he wasn't handled much in his previous home, which is probably how he escaped, been on his own for a while--cause he was starving when food was offered.

I will pass along the training tips. My mom is a very patient person.
