Bunch spoke to a group of local business people this week at Business Morning Update, a monthly networking event held at the Chariot in downtown Hendersonville.

Park Ridge Hospital is part of the Seventh-day Adventist System which has 37 hospitals in 10 states and more than $5 billion in annual revenues. The Henderson County hospital has 230 physicians on its staff with 1,000 employees and is the third largest employer in the county, Bunch said.

Faith-based care is unlike anything else, he told the group.

“In a two-year study done by Johns Hopkins University, hospitals that had the lowest rate of central line infections were faith-based hospitals,” he said. “These types of infections are very serious since one out of seven patients who have this will die. The Adventist health system was the group Hopkins studied. The study results are being shared with hospitals across the country.”

Bunch also discussed the $8.3 million expansion currently underway at Park Ridge including the new Baby Place, scheduled to open June 11.

In addition to valet parking, expectant mothers can enjoy huge birthing suites, massages, spa therapy and bedside movies, he said.

“These suites are much bigger in size than some other hospital rooms which gives new families plenty of room,” Bunch said. “It will be a very family-centered environment.”

A major patient initiative is the installation of the Get Well Network, which is a communication tool where patients can communicate with the hospital via e-mail, movies, and get video patient education to make the hospital more accessible to the public. In addition to bedside movies, there is Internet access. Patients have a keyboard that lets the patient type in comments, requests, make food orders, get access to their personal e-mail account and watch movies as part of the patient experience, he said.

“The nurses are thrilled about this because this will really free up their time that can be devoted to one-on-one personal care instead of running around trying to get someone on the phone or make sure a food order gets to the proper place,” Bunch said. “Great things are happening and we are very excited about it.”

I see nothing referencing the method of healing that Jesus told us to follow. Lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.

Maybe it isn't really "faith-based care" like it says it is.
