Perhaps the point of the Pastor Asscherick's letter is over-done in some respects, however I do believe that the letter illustrates an important point made by Jesus. Namely, that the church of God will [to a certain extent] begin to “eat and drink with the drunken”.

That is, some of the church will effectively sit down at the same ‘table’ to eat and drink with those that are drunk with the wine (i.e. the doctrines/ teachings) of Babylon.

While it is true that the Seventh Day Adventist church will not become Babylon (and so there will be no true call to “come out of her”), yet the church, in it’s various educational arms, can certainly imbibe Babylonian wine and dainties. We can become just as drunk, and our judgment can become just as impaired as “the drunken” harlots. And maybe even more-so! Babylon is long accustomed to the “wine” of drunkards. I think we are less accustomed. But where does that put us? It puts us in the unenviable position of being more likely to go to excess, and to exceed Babylon in her shameful follies.

When the teachings of men are substituted for the word of God, then faith in the Scriptures will be destroyed. Many people grow up with strong faith in the statements of so-called science. They are taught by inference that the word of God is little more than a collection of fables concocted by simple men who knew no better. And this, even in our own church schools! Let us marvel and be amazed.

How often are science and technology represented as Saviors of the world in popular works of fiction!

How often is the voice of science counted as an unassailable, absolute authority!

How foolish we are!

Question - how long is the attack on the Sabbath going to be delayed by La Sierra now that they have bought the farm on the myths and fictions of eovlutionism?

While I don't agree with evolution, you don't need the creation to maintain the Sabbath....

Dear writer, I do not wish to offend you in my query, but I am genuinely curious about the reason you include what appears to be a copyright "c" after the "Tree of Life" name. Quite an unusual thing to do I think.

Please forgive me if I have picked up on the smallest of points, but to me this "c" seems like a very bold step to take.

Dear Stewart,

Thank you for your interest in a thing that is very close to my heart!

The © symbol is a claim of copyright, as no doubt you know already. What is not so commonly recognized is that that symbol pertains to the private domain, that is in contradistinction to the public domain. Anyone may use that symbol attached to a thing of theirs and thereby making notice to others of their exclusive rights to the thing so marked.

In contradistinction, the ® symbol is used to mark a thing as claimed and copyrighted under the trusteeship of a public authority, typically under a State.

Perhaps your concern may be something to the effect that I am claiming an exclusive right to the use of the name ‘Tree of Life’ per se. That is not so. As with any name in common use, anyone may still use such a name and copyright it too. What cannot lawfully be done is to use said name associated with the same collateral, whether physical or intellectual property, as that of the claimant.

Thus, when I use the © symbol I do in effect notify the reader that my words, or a thing being claimed by my words, is my exclusive property and that both my title and the associated collateral is to remain outside of the public domain.

By making such notice ab initio I retain the highest claims to my property and if there is ever a conflict or a question as to proper ownership, then mine stands as the highest claim. If I allow others to use my name as an appellation for the purpose of calling my attention, then that is my choice. If I allow others to freely copy anything I write then that is my choice. I can limit the rights of others to use that which is mine as I please.

Yet, others can use a name just like the one I am using and attach it to that which is theirs, only so long as they attach it exclusively to such things as are theirs to use and do not infringe upon that which belongs to another.

The bottom line is that this © symbol is indeed a most powerful symbol that may be effectively used for distinguishing between such things as are claimed under none but the One that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters, and in contradistinction to such things as are being claimed within the system represented so well by Nebuchadnezzar’s Stat(u)e in Daniel chapter 2.

No doubt you can find much more re the use of the © symbol in other and better references, but the above represents some of my thoughts at the top of my head at this instance in time and re that particular.

Hope that helps,

Shalom,

Thank you. I appreciate your response to my question.

Yet I do feel some concern over your claims. Of course there is a literal Tree of Life in heaven, from which all of the redeemed will partake. Wisdom is also referred to in the Bible as a Tree of Life, and likewise is a "wholesome tongue" referred to as a Tree of Life.

But in some way do you claim to be, or have, these things in advance of others? Do you posses some kind of presedence (or ascendency) in the things of God?

Prov 3:13-18 "Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that gets understanding... She [i.e. wisdom] is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her."

Prov 15:4 "A wholesome tongue is a tree of life..."

I often wonder how any of us common folk can survive in this turmoil? Aren't we supposed to "press together"?

Us "common folk" accept the Bible teaching "For in SIX days the Lord CREATED the heavens and the Earth the Seas and all that are in them".

Then when we see Fritz Guy at La Sierra promoting evolutionism - we say "hmm -- somebody has fallen off the narrow road".

I think the following letter from the President of La Sierra University was the first response from the University to David Asscherick's letter. Some may be interested to see this, although for me the thought comes to mind: "He that has knowledge is sparing with his words" (Prov 17:27).

Personaly, I felt that many words have been used to say 'not a lot'.

But if you are interested to read, you may judge for yourself.

Dear friends,

I am writing to share with you my concern and disappointment about a recent letter regarding La Sierra University ("to Adventist church leaders about La Sierra University") that has received wide distribution on the Internet. This letter undercuts the educational work and ministry of La Sierra University, and indeed the broader system of Adventist higher education, rather than seeking better understanding and clarification of the concerns noted by the writer.

As president I take seriously any charge that La Sierra University is not fulfilling its sacred task and great responsibility to educate our students to be strong, thoughtful individuals whose worldview and hope is grounded in a close relationship with God.

In particular, this letter charges that "naturalistic evolution" is taught at La Sierra University - even while suggesting that evolution should be taught at our Adventist colleges and universities so that our students can better understand the world in which they live. "Naturalistic evolution" is a phrase that either in code or direct definition implies a perspective of "atheistic evolution."

We reject this implied atheistic charge. Every one of our science faculty share the goal of students experiencing a vibrant Adventist Christian faith while pursuing their education in the sciences.

At La Sierra University, we take seriously the challenge of how to best integrate science education and faith development. Ultimately, our goal is to help students develop a personal relationship with their Creator. We are deeply committed to helping our students find during their experience at La Sierra University a vibrant faith that will deepen throughout their lives and lead them to the life to come. Our success in achieving that goal is demonstrated every year as we watch students being baptized into Adventist Church membership and see our students and graduates engage in lives of Christian service.

We expect that students will be introduced to the prevailing scientific views within a supportive classroom environment that values the Seventh-day Adventist Church's contribution to the understanding of biblical creation. It is our commitment to our students and to their families that our professors will continue to support learning and encourage conversation in a spirit of openness. In this way we live out our university's commitment to responsibly address difficult issues and our willingness to consider a variety of views. This grows from our church's commitment to ever be open to new light.

As an institution of higher education, a Seventh-day Adventist university provides an excellent setting for examining evolutionary process - a subject that is foundational to the modern biological and behavioral sciences. This broad topic will recur throughout our students' educational experience if they continue on to graduate studies and basic research in these fields, and is of growing importance in biomedical applications. At La Sierra, students investigate this process surrounded by faculty, staff, and peers who care about their whole person, not just their academic life. They have opportunities to ask hard questions and to address these issues in a supportive Adventist Christian environment.

People of faith who look at scientific data can reach differing conclusions and still be collegial as brothers and sisters in the church. The Seventh-day Adventist Church has always benefited from debate and indeed has matured because of it. Faculty in Adventist institutions of higher learning have played an important and sometimes courageous role in extending the boundaries of knowledge in many fields.

We at La Sierra University are continuing to examine how we teach the science relevant to origins in a supportive, Adventist Christian environment. We continue to welcome input made in a spirit of constructive Christian fellowship and which is respectful of scientific integrity - recognizing that while we may not fully agree on everything, our mutual concern is always for unity in love to our Lord and in service to His children. We are also committed to be of ongoing service to our church in this important conversation of science and faith. A number of our faculty have presented papers and have been involved in recent meetings that our church has called to give study to this challenging area.

As the Valuegenesis research spearheaded at La Sierra University has discovered, the ability to ask questions in a caring, open environment is one of the main factors in the decision of Adventist young people to stay in the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

These charges made against us, sadly, are not unique to La Sierra University. Some in our church continue to challenge and question our entire system of universities and colleges. They question our commitment to the important work of Adventist education. They challenge the orthodoxy of those who take on the important and God-inspired task of educating our students in transforming ways that have lifelong impact. I want it to be clearly understood that those of us who teach, those of us who have the privilege of serving at an Adventist university, take our mission and our responsibilities towards our students seriously. Our faculty and campus community give their lives, and the best of their intellect and service, to God through their academic preparation, ongoing research, teaching and mentoring. La Sierra is a vibrant academic and spiritual community that forever transforms our students for God and for a life of faithful service.

La Sierra University is a place where academic investigation, Christian faith, and service to others unite. We support the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in powerful ways, such as:

• The Valuegenesis and CognitiveGenesis studies that originated at La Sierra help us to understand the young people we effectively minister to and with.

• LSU sponsored 11 mission projects this academic year in Costa Rica, Egypt, Hawaii, Honduras, India, Malawi, Mexico, Navajo Nation, Philippines, Tanzania, and Texas. Dozens of students have been involved in Share Him evangelism, and 15 student literature evangelists reach families in our community every day. Hundreds of students have served overseas, from Afghanistan to Vietnam, as student missionaries in recent years.

• La Sierra students and faculty, this past year, provided more than 45,000 hours of caring service to our local community. We earned the coveted community engagement designation from the Carnegie Foundation-one of only 118 institutions in North America to be so recognized.

• The La Sierra University Students in Free Enterprise team recently brought major recognition to the Seventh-day Adventist Church as they progressed to the final round at the 2009 SIFE National Competition in Philadelphia. Their projects helped people in Ethiopia, Thailand, and the United States.

• We will soon have the privilege of participating in the baptism of a number of our students who have been studying this year with our Chaplain and with members of our School of Religion. A few days ago I listened as the father of one of these students who stood before the Pacific Union Executive Committee and thanked God that his daughter was at La Sierra and that she had decided to be baptized.

Finally, as the president of La Sierra University, and as a parent of one of our 1,900 students, I am grateful that La Sierra is a place that is recognized for its commitment to Adventist faith and learning. Every day we dedicate this campus to the Lord. Like the father with his arms open wide in the Alan Collins' sculpture, The Glory of God's Grace, that stands at the entrance to our campus, it is our privilege to welcome young people in an attitude of grace and love that characterizes our Father's deep love and passion for each of us. When I talk with parents who send their children to us, often at great sacrifice, they tell me they do so because they deeply believe in our commitment, as faculty and staff, to provide the very finest Adventist education.

As one parent noted, at a recent alumni event in Northern California, the monthly check she writes for her student's education is the most satisfying investment she makes.

May we, as a campus community, affirm God's powerful work that is daily revealed in our teaching, research, and service.

Sincerely,

Randal Wisbey

Well Randal Wisby is in a truly compromised position given that both Fritz Guy of his religion department and his science department professors all wish to see disinctively atheist doctrines of darwinism presented as if that religion were some odd form of "science fact".

(How "instructive" that the atheist doctrines manifest themselves so clearly in the form of students rejecting entirely the Romans 1 claim that even pagans (or Barbarians as Paul calls them) are without excuse for pretending not to see the "invisible attributes of God clearly seen in the things that have been made"). Essentially the science faculty and students wanted to claim the Atheist low-ground that IF there is a God and He did make something -- He did NOT do it in such a way that you can detect that the MAKER had any intelligence at all!!!!!!!!!!!!

He needed to have some way to save the school from abandonment by informed SDAs.

We can all sympathize with his situation - not wanting stand up for the truth and contradict his staff -- while also not wanting Adventist families to fully be aware of the damage being done.

His was in a tight spot in that regard - but he mastered the task well.

Now that we have had Randal Wisby's uninspiring opinion regarding the progressive-adventist idea of marrying the religion of evolutionism to the religion of Christ -- let's look at the inspired views of Ellen White on this subject -- by contrast.

Quote:

Satan Seeks to Exalt Science Above the Bible

Science, so-called, human reasoning and poetry, cannot be passed on as of equal authority with revelation; but it is Satan's studied purpose to exalt the maxims, traditions, and inventions of men to an equal authority with the Word of God; and, having accomplished this, to exalt the words of man to the place of supremacy . — RH Nov. 20, 1894.

Long Indefinite ages - Sophistry of Satan

The sophistry in regard to the world being created in an indefinite period of time is one of Satan's falsehoods. God speaks to the human family in language they can comprehend. He does not leave the matter so indefinite that human beings can handle it according to their theories. — Letter 31, 1898.

Because God's Works Cannot be Explained by Finite Minds, Many Doubt

Today there are many who have taken their position on the side of unbelief, as if it were a virtue, the sign of a great mind, to doubt. Because the works of God cannot be explained by finite minds, Satan brings his sophistry to bear upon them, and entangles them in the meshes of unbelief. If these doubting ones would come in close connection with God, He would make His purposes clear to their understanding. — YI March 21, 1901.

Darwinism of the DEVIL?? How closely do Morneau and Ellen White agree on this?

Quote:
Roger Morneau

This is what Satan meant when he told the council (demons council held in 1700’s) he would destroy the Bible without burning it.

He outlined to them just how he would use evolution to destroy man's belief in: 1) the creation week , 2) the fall of man , and 3) the plan of redemption.

He said anyone teaching this theory was to be blessed by him before the whole galaxy and greatly esteemed. They would be given 5 angels to be assigned to them throughout their life. They would be considered ministers of this great religious system , and would be given great power to: a) induce spiritual blindness, B) to convince and c) to convert.

No Harmony Exists Between Scientists, Falsely So-Called, and the Bible

Men take the writings of scientists, falsely so-called, and seek to make their deductions harmonize with the statements of the Bible. But where there is no agreement, there can be no harmony. — RH Nov. 24, 1891.

Satan Seeks to Exalt Science Above the Bible Science, so-called, human reasoning and poetry, cannot be passed on as of equal authority with revelation; but it is Satan's studied purpose to exalt the maxims, traditions, and inventions of men to an equal authority with the Word of God; and, having accomplished this, to exalt the words of man to the place of supremacy. — RH Nov. 20, 1894.

In Language Man Can Comprehend

The sophistry in regard to the world being created in an indefinite period of time is one of Satan's falsehoods. God speaks to the human family in language they can comprehend. We need to guard continually against the sophistry in regard to geology and other branches of science falsely so-called, which have not one semblance of truth. The theories of great men need to be carefully sifted of the slightest trace of infidel suggestion. One tiny seed sown by teachers in our schools, if received by the students, will raise a harvest of unbelief. — RH March 1, 1898.

The divine mind and hand have preserved through the ages the record of creation in its purity. It is the word of God alone that gives to us an authentic account of the creation of our world. —Counsels to Parents and Teachers, p. 13.

We are dependent on the Bible for a knowledge of the early history of our world, of the creation of man, and of his fall. Remove the word of God, and what can we expect than to be left to fables and conjectures, and to that enfeebling of the intellect which is the sure result of entertaining error. We need the authentic history of the origin of the earth, of the fall of the covering cherub, and of the introduction of sin into our world. Without the Bible, we should be bewildered by false theories. The mind would be subjected to the tyranny of superstition and falsehood. But having in our possession an authentic history of the beginning of our world, we need not hamper ourselves with human conjectures and unreliable theories.—Medical Ministry, p. 89.

Jesus Christ is Creator of All Things

Those who read and listen to the sophistries that prevail in this age do not know God as He is. They contradict the Word of God, and extol and worship nature in the place of the Creator.

Men today declare that Christ's teachings concerning God cannot be substantiated by the things of the natural world, that nature is not in harmony with the Old and New Testament Scriptures. This supposed lack of harmony between nature and science does not exist. The Word of the God of heaven is not in harmony with human science, but it is in perfect accord with His own created science.

This living God is worthy of our thought, our praise, our adoration, as the Creator of the world, as the Creator of man. We are to praise God, for we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Our substance was not hid from Him when we were made in secret. — Ms 117, 1908.

So... we should get rid of +-90% of our Bibles and only pay attention to what Jesus said? Didn't He say to search the Scriptures? I think we should focus on Jesus' words more, but only? Moses, Jeremiah, Paul, etc., all wrote about Jesus. They wrote about things that Jesus did not specifically mention because He wanted His followers to study their Bibles.

Yes, Jesus quoted from the Old Testament, but we ain't Jesus.   The teachings of Jesus may only be a very small percentage of the Bible, but they are the most important.   They contain all of the elements of a Biblical covenant. (If the 7 elements of the ancient Suzerainty covenants are not known, ask some OT scholar you trust.)   Jesus said a lot in a small amount of teaching, thus it is the narrow way.   As we read His teachings over and over, we become filled with them and we see gem after gem of truth that we never saw before.   And because Jesus was God in the flesh, His teachings come to us quoted, straight from the mouth of God.   Following Him is walking the straight and narrow path.

What was it in the parable of Lazarus and the rich man that Christ pointed to were the witnesses to heed avoid the fate of the wicked? Moses and the Prophets? Luke 16:19-31

What was it that Christ used to unveil the eyes of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus? Moses and all the prophets? Luke 24:27

Since Jesus' teaching came entirely from the Old Testament, and upheld the Law and the Prophets as being entirely in force until the end of time, I will say without doubt or hesitation Christ means for us to know them as well as the Gospels. "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished." - Matthew 5:17,18

Second, if we are searching Scripture (Old or New) without the eyes of faith to see the testimony of Jesus, we read them for naught, for Christ tells us they are those which testify of Him. "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me" - John 5:39

Third, if we deny Christ can speak through any particular person - if we are so focused on the sinner being a "sinner", waiting for "perfection" to occur in that person before we may accept that Christ can speak through them, we miss out on God working His power and giving His testimony.

It never ceases to amaze me how people will state Christ can speak only through "perfect" people, never realizing that if they had been alive in Christ's day, they would have never admitted He was indeed God in the flesh, for all that was seen was...a man in the flesh.

That's but one reason why the Pharisees rejected Him - He was "as a root out of dry ground, and we esteemed Him not".

The hard truth of the matter is that most people would rather be comfortable in their sins, undisturbed by God speaking through another unworthy saint with the message of repentance.

It was Paul writing to Timoty the second time saying, "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work."

That would be 2 Timothy 3:16, 17. Not just the Gospels, but all inspired Scripture - because it all comes from the Spirit of Christ.

"As iron sharpens iron, so also does one man sharpen another" - Proverbs 27:17

"The offense of the cross is that the cross is a confession of human frailty and sin and of inability to do any good thing. The point is that if we followed the teachings of Jesus, we would study the whole Bible, because He said to. If we only studied Jesus' teachings then we'd have no Daniel or Revelation to show the future, no Historical books to show us how God worked in the past, no epistles to give us guidance, etc.
