Moderators Bravus Posted May 24, 2009 Moderators Posted May 24, 2009 (this is not intended to be a political topic, but it has the potential to swing that way - if so, mods, please move it to the Politics forum (though I won't be able to follow)) I read the phrase I have used as a topic line in an article by David Sirota about Yankee Stadium, and it just seemed to sum up for me so perfectly the times we live in. If there's socialism going on, it's not socializing health care or education or the things that improve people's lives, it's socializing corporate risks, or insuring corporations against the consequences of the risks they assumed. In a market, risk and return need to be linked in order for the market to work. When taxpayers assume the risk but individuals and corporations assume the profits, the market is broken. Ted Oplinger Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Bravus, In the 1920's and 30's, this type of system bore the "F" word name: Fascism, because there's only one entity with the authority to render that kind of extraction from the taxpayer, and extend the monies to secure the corporations' risks - a nation's government. Today, what would we call the emerging global picture? Not only are taxpayers of any one of many nations assuming the risk for the various corporations, they are also subsidizing their government's entitlement programs as well - what we know goes by the name "socialism". As for this humble opinion, it appears that what we are seeing emerging in different parts of the world is a hybrid between what used to be polar enemies within the political left spectrum 70 years ago - a fascist/socialism beast. Whatever it is called, it will surely fall, for the economics will not support that system for very long. Quote "As iron sharpens iron, so also does one man sharpen another" - Proverbs 27:17 "The offense of the cross is that the cross is a confession of human frailty and sin and of inability to do any good thing. To take the cross of Christ means to depend solely on Him for everything, and this is the abasement of all human pride. Men love to fancy themselves independent. But let the cross be preached, let it be made known that in man dwells no good thing and that all must be received as a gift, and straightway someone is offended." Ellet J. Waggoner, The Glad Tidings "Courage is being scared to death - and saddling up anyway" - John Wayne "The person who pays an ounce of principle for a pound of popularity gets badly cheated" - Ronald Reagan
