Son

He used to toddle 'round the house, learning how to run.

He'd run and jump in daddy's arms, and have a world of fun.

He used to call me daddy when his world had just begun,

He used to call me daddy. I used to call him son,

Before Kindergarten on that sunny summer day,

Before graduation, the years just melt away,

Before he learned the difference between good and bad,

Before he learned that others could be smarter than his dad,

Before he got the greetings from the U.S. president,

Before we got the telegram the U.S. Army sent,

That said: "Your son had died a hero on the front embattled line,

That he had jumped between his buddies and a backward Claymore mine,

And a father should be proud to have a son so brave and kind

Who would sacrifice himself to keep other men from dying."

Now, he toddles 'round in my crazy feeble mind.

Now I have a memory, and a world full of pride.

But I'd give all that, and all the world, and all that I could find,

If he could call me daddy one more time.
