an unusual story about a prisoner and a church newsletter

25 years ago my brother was Pathfinder Director for our church and there were quite a few members, both SDA and non-SDA. Well, my brother moved on and upwards in the church hierarchy over the years. This past Sabbath my mom got a call from one of the former Pathfinder members asking for my brother's address. It just happened that that he was here visiting for a wedding. She got him on the phone and the conversation went something like this...

The former member is now an ex-convict, 2 years now out of prison for doing drugs. He wanted to invite my brother to his wedding in August. He told about the fact that someone had sent his name and prison address to get our church newsletter. Apparently ANYONE who gets mail in prison is top dog in that cell block. Whenever he got the newsletter all the other prisoners would ask if that was the newsletter from his church, and every page got passed around to every single person to read. It was the highlight of their day. He was in prison for 2 years.

This fellow now has a job but does not attend church....but thinks enough of the church to want to start a prison ministry with the SDA church. My brother is going to keep in contact with him (and is going to try to get up here to Oregon to attend the wedding..)

Just a reminder of how such a small thing as sending out a church newsletter to someone who might be interested can really be used by God...

If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony.

Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

I've been thinking lately of the enormous need there is for prison ministry. What a simple thing to send a newsletter!
