Dr. Shane Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 Last year we had an unwed teenager in our church give birth. Well, she never married the father so while at a work bee last week I cracked a joke about her. I said she needed to become a vegetarian so the butcher wouldn’t knock her up. Now her mother is all upset and demanding I apologize. Can’t people take a joke? I wasn’t serious. I was just trying to be funny. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Dr. Shane Posted June 13, 2009 Author Posted June 13, 2009 Ok, Ok... there is a little more. But it is a joke too. I also said her mother shouldn't come to church dressed like a slutty flight attendant. But it was a joke. Why can't she see the humor in that? Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Moderators John317 Posted June 13, 2009 Moderators Posted June 13, 2009 Good point, Shane. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Ted Oplinger Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 Ummmm...The "Letterman" defense isn't... Had this been a real incident, in a real church, the "joker" would likely have been dressed down pretty harshly. Mr. Letterman wants a pass? Not from me....Ol' Forest Gump said it pretty well about these things.... But let the cross be preached, let it be made known that in man dwells no good thing and that all must be received as a gift, and straightway someone is offended." Ellet J. carolaa Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 As I understood it, the brunt of the joke was supposed to be about A-Rod, not the Palin girls. But you make a good point. Quote
GreatLakesGramma Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 There is NOTHING funny about that kind of joke. Dr. Shane Posted June 13, 2009 Author Posted June 13, 2009 I guess I never knew that flight attendants were [censored] or dressed like [censored]. I always thought of them as professional women. Hmmm, I had a girlfriend that wanted to be a flight attendant once. If only I had known then what I know now. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Ted Oplinger Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 I agree totally, Shane. And, if I were in A-Rod's shoes, I'd be angry for someone to suggest I would be a kind of man to...do that to any 14-18 year old. On either count (target of joke either the Palin women or A-Rod), the joke is a dud. A loser, man. Ol' Letterman (and his joke writer) should certainly get the boot, just like Imus did for remarks concerning a certain girls' basketball team. Even worse, though: Imus' remarks were unscripted, off-the-cuff. Letterman's "joke" was scripted knowingly and delivered intentionally. Members phkrause Posted June 13, 2009 Members Posted June 13, 2009 I do believe that is what he's doing, because I got the same impression. And I'd say he's done a good job of it. And as far as Letterman saying it was about A-Rod, I think he's trying to scramble now. Either way it's still a sick joke. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
oldsailor29 Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 Ol' Letterman (and his joke writer) should certainly get the boot, just like Imus did for remarks concerning a certain girls' basketball team. Even worse, though: Imus' remarks were unscripted, off-the-cuff. Letterman's "joke" was scripted knowingly and delivered intentionally. I was listening to Imus when he made that remark. I think everybody was. That was the kind of remark Imus fans always expected of him. He always said disparaging things about the people he talked about. And everybody knew he was joking because his remarks were usually just about the worst thing anybody could say about somebody. For example Imus regularly referred to Vice President Cheney as a traitor. I think the Rutgers Woman's Basketball team missed an excellent recruiting opportunity by not using Imus for recruiting publicity. On the other hand, nobody watches Letterman anyway. But I can see that Palin, savvy person that she is, is going to wring all the publicity out of his remarks that can be wrung out. All I can say is, you go girl. Dr. Shane Posted June 13, 2009 Author Posted June 13, 2009 Yes, anytime some media personality does something like this it boosts their ratings. Neil D Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 And it since it involves Palin, it keeps her in the limelight as well. Again, if this continues, I suspect this thread will follow the other threads...into the black hole of ...somewhere....if it turns anymore political... GreatLakesGramma Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 I really do not care one bit about the political issues involved. If anyone made a joke like that about MY daughter, they would be very sorry when I got done with them. Any normal mother would feel the same, and many fathers too. Even if the joke is about someone else, nobody ever makes the mistake a second time, of telling me that kind of joke. Their fun gets spoiled very quickly when I tell them what I think of jokes like that. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. Neil D Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Catherine- It was on LATE NIGHT TELEVISION. And the truth be told, Palin is a joke anyways, at least in the comedians eyes. That ilk of politian is always foder for the comedians. Just look at Jay Leno...He's been making hay out of the Clinton scandels for 10 years. If they said that about your daughter [or mine] under the same conditions and time slot, and knowing that you [and I normally] go to bed early, you would never hear what Letterman said. PS- Letterman has always been making these types of jokes...Why do you think he's on LATE AT NIGHT? And if my daughter heard of it, oh yeah, we would be mad at Letterman, but it blows over quite quickly...otherwise, Letterman milks it for all he's worth....And guess what? He's milking it now...
