Neil D Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Gamma rays bursts So, does this cause concern among the Adventist people? Does this have Revelation concerns? Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. George Bernard Shaw
Moderators Bravus Posted June 18, 2009 Moderators Posted June 18, 2009 The connection is a bit different to that suggested in the topic sentence, but it's potentially interesting. (There's some dodgy maths in the article where they first state that we used to think the source of the burst was 45,000 light years away but now think it's 25-30,000 light years away, but then use the 45,000 figure in calculations, but it's not a huge issue.) What would have happened is that some massive event in that star, about 30,000 light years ago (heh, assuming the universe is that old) would have caused *both* a burst of gamma rays and a burst of gravity waves (remember, of course, that at this point gravity waves are a purely theoretical construct, with very large experiments going on in a number of places to be the first to actually observe them in nature). The gravity waves could conceivably have caused a shift in gravity around our planet that was enough to trigger a pre-existing tension between the tectonic plates of the earth, triggering an earthquake under the ocean. This one was particularly devastating because it involved a lot of up-and-down movement of the sea floor, creating hugely energetic tsunami waves. I guess it's lightly plausible that there could have been a link... but there are plenty of earthquakes that *don't* require a trigger. Earthquakes are just a side effect of plate tectonics. The other thing is that the gamma ray burst arrived almost two days *after* the tsunami, so it's not even particularly useful to us as an early warning mechanism... Interesting to think about, though. Quote Truth is important
Amelia Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Quote: Do Gamma Rays from space cause Tsunamis? Sounds like a title to a great book. LOL It also sounds like the "butterfly effect" in Chaos Theory. BobRyan Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Gamma rays bursts So, does this cause concern among the Adventist people? Does this have Revelation concerns? "Something" we can't predict well - caused the earthquake. Was it some force-structure deep within the earth - or a complex interaction between earth and something else? How would Adventism or eschatology have any say at all about that? (Of course there is always the point of gravity waves being something we don't detect at all -- no not even in the case mentioned in the article -- but that is another story). in Christ, Bob Quote John 8:32 - The Truth will make you free“The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin." Neil D Posted June 18, 2009 Author Posted June 18, 2009 As I understand the article, as this burst of gamma radiation approached the earth, just as the water recedes before a wave, so did the gravity waves receded and then came upon the earth. How much of this is true and how much is fiction, I just don't have an idea. This is nearly word for word from Lyle Norton's book on Last day events... I am a skeptic...that is why I put this up, as I wanted some other more knowledgeable people to look at this and tell me if there is some good rational on it... Moderators Bravus Posted June 18, 2009 Moderators Posted June 18, 2009 Not quite, Neil. As I said, the gamma rays didn't cause the gravity waves, or vice versa. Rather, some kind of explosion caused both, at the same time and place. The article suggests that the gravity waves arrived here slightly ahead of the gamma rays, that's all. Quote Truth is important
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted June 18, 2009 Members Posted June 18, 2009 This all keeps making me think of Matthew 24:29 where it says that the "sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken".... No one ever remembers the part about the "heavenly bodies will be shaken.." but this could be a part of it of the prophecy, perhaps --- but I could be wrong... Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
Moderators Bravus Posted June 18, 2009 Moderators Posted June 18, 2009 In this case, of course, the heavenly body was shaken 30,000 years ago. But what is time to God, I guess? Quote Truth is important
Planey Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 the gravity waves arrived here slightly ahead of the gamma rays Knowing that gamma rays are part of the electromagnetic spectrum, just having a shorter wavelength than visible light, and noticing that these rays and the gravity rays (postulated) were created by the same event and traveled the same distance, are we to assume then that gravity rays travel faster than light? Graeme Quote Graeme____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Moderators Bravus Posted June 19, 2009 Moderators Posted June 19, 2009 Yeah, that was one possibility suggested. The other was that the gravity waves propagated at lightspeed and the gamma rays underwent some 'gravitational lensing' and other effects that slowed them slightly. It was only by a factor of one in 9 million or something: 44 hours in 30,000 odd years. The article Neil linked is well worth a read if you get a chance, just as something interesting. It's very speculative - anything that messed with gravity enough to get a few million tons of rock on the move would presumably also have been felt by us and in other ways - but there's really no easy 'gotcha' hole I can find in the article. You might have more success. Quote Truth is important
Neil D Posted June 20, 2009 Author Posted June 20, 2009 There is a book called "Shaking Heaven & Earth" [you were right Rudywoofs], that uses this theory to explain the tsunomi. It uses these scientific facts to explain some our prophetic writings,,.... The book is by Lyle Norton....I've only started reading it...Bravus, you might like to look at it....Lyle is a member of my church, and seems a very brilliant man.... but when it comes to prophetic writings and the explaination of last day events, I am a bit of a skeptic....no, let me rephrase that a bit more clearly...I am a down right hard man to convince the veracity of some of our brethern's 'secret knowledge' or conspiratorial theories.... Perhaps, it is my experience that people's spiritual pride is so blataint so as to be nauseating.... Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve.
