Moderators Kevin H Posted June 20, 2009 Moderators Posted June 20, 2009 Jesus modified this verse: in response to it being easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle and the disciples say "Who then can be saved" Jesus responded with "What is impossible for men is possible for God" and promised the disciples (who were not as poor as tradition says they were) that what they gave up would be repaid in this life 100 fold BUT WITH PERSECUTIONS The disciples, who did come from fairly well to do homes and families did end up pretty good as they were so respected that people wanted to give them their best, and they had the persecutions. John, Peter and Paul were not small time people overlooked by the bigwigs, but they were big enough for Nero and Domitian to know who they were and to be jellous of them. But part of this promise would include needing to be ready to receive God's blessing, and what can we do to get God's blessing. Of course we need to keep in tension the opposits of Milk and Honey and how both milk and honey are blessings from God. (Milk and Honey were ancient geographical terms. Honey -- more accuraetly translated perserves-- is preserved foods, indicates an agracultural lifestyle, a life thats predictable, easy and exciting, wealth, class distinctions and leasure. But where you can loose site of your need for God and also where invading armies pass through. Milk came from goats, out in the desert, you don't know if your garden will grow or not, moveing around for your flocks to feed. A life unpredictable, hard and lonely, but here you daily know that you need God to survive, but you are relatively safe from invading armies. -- Biblical Israel; the size of New Jersey, 50 miles wide by 150 miles long has more variety in geography, weather, plants, animals, in a small area than anyplace else on earth. The land flows with milk and honey and everyplace in between.) Jacob after the dream of Jacobs ladder, prayed for the bare necesities. But at the river edge after wrestling all night, even after made out fairly well, instead of letting go with the bare necesities, said he would not let go until God blessed him. Too often we have the attitude of Jacob fleeing instead of the Jacob who returned. But also God is not going to bless us with more honey unless we are prepared both to accept it and to also allow it to help our spiritual life and to be safe from the different invading armies that we face and that can pull us away from God, in which place God would bless us with what we are able to take and wait until heaven for us to really be blessed. I forgot all the details, I was listening to this recording durring Desert Shield and have not heard it since, but Dr. Richard Nies tells how as a child on the sand on the beach and found a dollar and spent the rest of his play time just digging for more dollars, and how as an adult he thought about Jesus' promise about repaying 100 fold in this life and came across an Ellen White statement on how God often can't give keep that promise because of our condition. So how can we change the condition? Also, studies in the Adventist pioneers found that most of the first generation Seventh-day Adventists were the wealthy landowners in their community. And with the emphessess on education has made us one of the wealthiest religions percapata. Quote
LifeHiscost Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 Also, studies in the Adventist pioneers found that most of the first generation Seventh-day Adventists were the wealthy landowners in their community. And with the emphessess on education has made us one of the wealthiest religions percapata. Wealth usually indicates well disciplined effort that brings its' just rewards. That's why I think it is not necessarily material wealth being focused on in this verse. That seems to be substantiated by the Amplified version of the Word. "The blessing of the Lord--it makes [truly] rich, and He adds no sorrow with it [neither does toiling increase it]."Proverbs 10:22 AMP Regards! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
