Out-of-Control Emails

>>A diatribe such as Liz's would be more understandable coming after numerous offenses, but she went on a tirade after only 1 offense and continued even after the offender tried several times to apologize. Inexcusable.<<

I confess that I do not redirect to 'links' - there usually being more than sufficient in posts - to respond to, so did not follow the exchange of 19 e-mails.

That said, I hold both parties responsible; after all, what possesses anyone to persist through 19 e-mails!? And, yes,

Liz did seem to display unnecessary obtuseness. That, however, does not disallow the

“Like I said, it’s a hot button for me.”

That statement indicates an action already completed and forms an explanatory apology of sorts. Like I said,

it may have been a bad-hair day.

Personally, given the crazy stuff! emerging from the Senate Body these days, I'd think 'anything but...' would be an improvement over the title Senator.

You can call me Redwood

or

You can call me Woodie

or

You can call me Red.

or

You can call me RW

or you can call me 'Tall Tree who blows in the wind'.

or 'he who is of Strong Wood'.

You can even call me a 'Blind Dog'.

But don't call me any name that has been banned by this forum and starts with the letter 'G'.

Well, I am going to continue calling you "Uncle Red" <hugs>

You know people have called me all sorts of things, as long as it's meant in a nice way, I don't get offended. I remember waiting to board a plane and a guy I never met before, comes up to me and says "Hey Shorty, what you up to?" and we had a nice conversation until we had to get on our different planes. It is just a way to break the ice sometimes. If they do try to shorten it to Beth or Betty, I just tell them I prefer Liz, and it is no big deal. The only one I had a problem with, was when I went into a doctor's office with one of the kids, and the doc tried to call me "mom", I couldn't handle that one.

So we all agree that this "Liz" went a tad overboard, but what about ya'll? Do ya'll have a favorite name you like to go by, and if someone calls you different do you correct them or just let it go? If they insist on calling you something different, do you continue to correct or eventually let it go?

Some people just have no life if they get upset because of their names. It doesn't matter to me what you call me. I know who I am regardless.

I, personally, don't agree that she went overboard. Personally, I think names are important and that people should respect one another in all circumstances. Respect includes using a person's given name until and unless the person has given one permission to use elsewise.

I'm so with Liz on this one. There are a lot worse names a person could be called.

Perhaps she WAS called some of those worse names under the caller's breath after THAT dialogue...

So a person apologizes and never misuses your name again after the first offense, and you think it's ok to keep harping on about it for another dozen-plus emails?!!! Please explain how that is rational and normal and not an extreme overreaction.

For sure! He made a mistake, but he showed a lot of class in apologizing and remaining professional throughout the whole ridiculous tirade. "Elizabeth," on the other hand, showed no class or professionalism whatsoever. Her mistake was far greater than his.

I never said it was rational, but I did say she did not go overboard, and "normal" is only in the eye of the beholder--what is "normal" to you, may be abnormal to others.

To be fair, she only responded 7 times according to the link I'm reading; secondly, she wanted her correspondent to understand why it is so important to her to have her name used correctly (a point, I might add, which seems to be misunderstood in this forum as well, as many here have continued to call her "Liz" thinking it somehow humorous to poke fun of her).

I would think one email would be sufficient to request the person to call her by her preferred name. If she feels the need to explain, which is not at all necessary, then one email ought to take care of that as well. What she did was overkill.

Frankly, she sounds a little paranoid, as well, the way she persists in wanting to know who told the person to call her Liz.

For someone who wants people to show manners toward her, she has none.

I agree with Aubrey. It's a matter of respect - something that has been largely abandoned in this society.

I agree. I don't think there's anyone on this forum who would get that upset over one offense of using a name incorrectly, especially if the person apologized and never did it again. Something is definitely seriously wrong with her. The Senator needs to insist she see a doctor posthaste if she wants to keep her job.

I have a simple (I think) last name. (No, I'm not going to give it out) 5 letters. 2 vowels, 3 consonants. Fairly easy to pronounce. I lived in Daytona Beach for quite some time. There is a town nearby that sounds like my last name, but is spelled differently. There were so many idiots that would spell my name wrong, it was unreal. Even church people who knew me for years. To say this rubbed me the wrong way is an understatement. Hey, if someone wants to be called Elizabeth, or Muhammed Ali instead of Cassius Clay, or King Kong, that's what I'll call them. I've called people "Dr." in a professional setting, and Bob at church or at the gym. A name is one of the things of people's identity. The best thing you can call someone is their name. It's about respect, not what rolls off our tongues easier.

Of course, it's important to show respect and call people by their preferred name. No one is questioning that Elizabeth had every right to ask someone not to call her Liz.

But when the the other party apologized and never misused Elizabeth's name again, Elizabeth should have had the common courtesy to let it go. Instead she had the poor manners and poor social skills and unprofessionalism to keep harping on about it ad nauseum.
