Florida- Your python population is growing

(CBS) A child was strangled to death by a python, Florida sheriff's officials said Wednesday, reports CBS affiliate WKMG-TV in Orlando.

The incident happened at 10 a.m. EDT, Sumter County officials said.

No other information was available about the incident, including the child's age.

An invasion of giant Burmese pythons in South Florida that made national headlines last year was "rapidly expanding" and could reach Central Florida, according to a University of Florida study, WKMG reports.

I've always had issues with Florida! I'm going there next week for a couple of days. I have visions of fighting off all kinds of wild animals in my hotel room. I'm scared!

Hmmmmmm...... my skeptical and overactive mind has been influenced by this .....

Lazarus...are you saying that....um...the animals of florida have a penchant for the sweet meat of a northern SDA black pastor?

...no racial nor geographical nor religous overtone intended.....

No, I think they'll attack anyone, anything. Florida is beginning to sound like Australia. I'm scared of Australia too!

This snake took down a child. My 6mth old would be a hefty meal for any snake let alone a 2,3,4,5,6 year old. This is scary. I think Florida should be declared a some kind of wilderness national park thingy!!!

Like Oz, I think that if you stay on the paths provided by the State of florida [or respectively Oz], you will be safe....If perchance that you drive your vehicle away from buildings to areas that are park-like or wilderness in nature, I would recommend that you stay in your car.....

.....you are not planning to go camping in Florida, are you? If so, a different set of parameters for abiding in florida may be needed....

....suggest that, at least this one, is read

Well Neil and Lazarus, I've been to the sunny state of Florida on many occasions, since my mom lives there, and have never been attacked by any animals. The only thing I've been attacked by is crazy drivers. lol :) And neither has my mom. The only thing that's attacked her is a few hurricanes and tornado's. :)

Baloney.......... the only snake I have seen in the last year is the little black one that lives in my yard. The only poisonous one I have seen was the Rattlesnake I caught about ten years ago in front of the Forest Lake Church. Pythons in the Everglades are seen once in awhile but it is not an epidemic. It's sort of like the Global Warming Craze being blamed on humans. If you repeat a lie often enough it appears to be the truth.

No need to go to south Florida for wild animals creeping around the hood. You can find it in central and northern Florida just as easy. Gators are everywhere down there - and in addition to your every day rattler - some of the most poisonous snakes on the planet live down there.

Not to mention Jacksonville "Shark capital of the world"

Forida is the home of big nasty poisonous large-toothed creepy slithering people-eating ... (well you see where I am going with that).

Visiting Florida? You better be packin' heat. It is every man for himself down there bwink

Or you could just stay in your car as you travel through -- sorta like going to Bush Gardens.

It's true that the constrictors are moving north. I've seen several reports about it.

I guess I didn't know enough to be scared the 26 years I have lived here...Oh, yeah... I have had as many as 26 pythons on my back porch.

LOL - Well, you never know. I understand they're very skilled at camouflage.

More of the story:

Man and girlfriend lived together with girlfriend's 2-yr. old daughter.

Man owned a Burmese python, and he was supposed to get a $500 permit, which he didn't.

Python was kept in a container of some sort; aquarium, or something like that.

Python escaped during the night, and was found in the child's crib, wrapped around her neck.

Charges pending.
