Woody Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Is Michael Jackson accepted by black Americans? I have to wonder this since MJ didn't like being black ... trying his hardest to change his appearance to that of a white person. What do blacks think of this? I would think they might consider him to be a traitor. What think you? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

I will see if I can find the other one.... Al Sharpton: Michael Jackson made Barack Obama president Speaking at Michael Jackson’s memorial service Tuesday, the Rev. Al Sharpton gave the entertainer credit for creating an environment in which Barack Obama could be elected president. “It was Michael Jackson that brought blacks and whites and Asians and Latinos together. It was Michael Jackson that made us sing ‘we are the world,’” said Sharpton. “It was that comfort level that kids from Japan and Ghana and France and Iowa and Pennsylvania got comfortable enough with each other so later it wasn't strange to us to watch Oprah on television,” the reverend continued. “Those young kids grew up from being teenage comfortable fans of Michael to being 40 years old and being comfortable to vote for a person of color to be the president of the United States of America.” “Michael did that,” Sharpton said. “Michael made us love each other.” In an interview Tuesday on CNN, Obama said Jackson was a combination of “extraordinary talent” and a “big dose of tragedy and difficulty in his private life.” “I don’t think there’s any doubt he was one of the greatest entertainers of our generation, perhaps any generation. I think like Elvis, like Sinatra, like the Beatles, he became a core part of our culture,” the president said. Obama added though that he does not think “we can ignore” Jackson’s past controversies but, the president said, “It’s important for us to affirm what was best in him.” http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0709/24646.html#ixzz0KhhScO1G&D Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. Stan Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 People accepted him as a musician, no one really cared if he was black or white when we listened to him. Spoken from a person who has been white all of his life. bonnie Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Quote: I think Bonnie did show what Sharpton actually said. A bit different. Ha Ha Ha!! I am not sure quite what you mean. Without going back and getting the precise words the meaning stayed intact. This is exactly the way Al Sharpton started his comment.... Michael Jackson made Barack Obama president and that comes pretty close to what I originally said. Michael Jackson had nothing to do with Obama and his presidency. There are many blacks that have made significent contributions that may have helped pave the way. The canonization of Michael Jackson and this belief that pop culture and those that contribute is a little skewed. I was an Elvis fan, thought those hysterical crying fans at the time were missing a few. Many thought Elvis was a great performer but he was also a every troubled man. Why canonize any of them. We don't look closely at the contributions of some truly remarkable people, but will worship at the altar of pop culture and those that make their living at such. Blacks may understand why a adult male will sleep with young boys and call it charming and loving but many of us to not. Catching any adult in bed with my young sons in this "loving and charming"way he would want to hope there was not a weapon handy. Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. carolaa Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 I think it's wise to let people say what they will about the deceased at a funeral, without putting a lot of stock or credence into it. Quote
bonnie Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 I think it's wise to let people say what they will about the deceased at a funeral, without putting a lot of stock or credence into it. I really don't care all that much what was said at his funeral. It is the glorification and adoration over and above that. Congressional resolution and now a desire to have a Michael Jackson stamp. To claim we have Barack Obama because of a pop star is ludicrous. Or at least I hope so. I would not and did not vote for Obama but at least I would hope those that did had better reason for voting for him Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. I would not and did not vote for Obama but at least I would hope those that did had better reason for voting for him Of course it's ludicrous, but that's the kind of stuff people say at funerals because it makes them feel better. It's just to be expected. Someone of his fame and popularity is going to be described as walking on water before it's over. Someone close to my family was murdered and thrown in a dumpster. Terrible, but not a bit surprising considering the lifestyle he lived. At the funeral, you'd have thought he was a saint - it even brought tears to my eyes. That stuff needs to be taken with a big grain of salt. Quote

Terrible, but not a bit surprising considering the lifestyle he lived. At the funeral, you'd have thought he was a saint - it even brought tears to my eyes. That stuff needs to be taken with a big grain of salt. Mostly I am talking about things that are said that is not part of the funeral. What you describe is typical. People become much better in death than life. I don't think some of what is going on is in deference to the family. I know I wouldn't like it if Michael were one of mine. A respectful funeral with positive remarks can be very much appreciated, making someone to be what they never were in life I would consider an insult. When you are laying one to rest that was extremely troubled and with more than one believing him a pedophile with good reason all the "perfect" hype brings back issues for family to read and hear. With a background such as his he does not warrant the honor of being on a postage stamp or congressional resolutions honoring him. Many like him have a tragic life. Not to many could deny he was a man with a extreme destructive nature that happened to have musical talent. However any may pity him, ultimately it was his decision not to get the help he needed. He could afford the best. The nation as a whole gives limited lip service to those that have truly laid their lives on the line for another or devoted their lives to helping others. It took me quite a while to work out that you were referring to Al Sharpton. At least I think you were. For a while I thought you were talking about Bonnie or Carolaa. I wasn't sure which one and I reckoned it didn't matter which one, we were headed for trouble... As I said, scary.
