Sunday Blue Laws News

"Arkansas Eliminates Blue Law That Banned Sunday Alcohol Sales"

NWAHomePage.com (Arkansas, USA) - "Arkansas became the 36th state to repeal its Blue Law banning Sunday liquor sales at package (liquor) stores, according to the Distilled Spirits Council, which called the state's decision a sign of things to come across the South as legislators continue looking for ways to raise revenue without raising taxes in this sour economy." - March 4, 2009

"Changing Blue Laws to Boost Revenue"

KTEN News (Oklahoma, USA) - "Sunday is the one day of the week when liquor stores are not allowed to open in Texas or Oklahoma. But this is no longer true for our neighbor Arkansas who recently changed their Blue Laws and is now allowing liquor stores to open on Sundays... Some residents in our area were opposed to changing the Blue Laws; some felt Sunday was the Lord's day and others said if they changed the law, it would not affect them at all." - March 8, 2009

"States across nation rethink 'blue laws'"

KSWO.com (Oklahoma, USA) - "State officials across the nation are looking for different ways to repair budget deficits, and one of the most talked about and controversial is to banish ‘blue laws.'... However, conservative religious groups say that the last thing society needs - especially during stressful economic times - is another day to sell liquor. "I know the media loves to make people on this side of the issue look like Bible-thumpers who want to impose their will," said Jim Beck with the Christian Coalition. "Just because something is consistent with values expressed in one religion doesn't make it bad policy."" - February 24, 2009

"Last Of The Blue Laws"

Hartford Courant (Connecticut, USA) (Editorial) - "Connecticut is one of only three states in the country that still ban the sale of alcoholic beverages on Sunday. The prohibition was imposed in 1933." - February 22, 2009

"Will the Recession Doom the Last Sunday Blue Laws?"

Time Magazine (USA) - "A handful of state legislatures have declared it's closing time for Sunday alcohol sales restrictions, saying an extra day of sales could give their foundering budgets a much-needed shot of revenue. Those states — Georgia, Connecticut, Texas, Alabama and Minnesota — enjoy overwhelming voter support for an extra day of sales, but face opposition from members of the Christian right, who say that selling on Sunday undermines safety and tears apart families. "During times of economic stress, our families are under enough pressure," says Jim Beck, the president of the Georgia Christian Coalition. "I don't think we need to add even more pressure to those families by passing this law."

"[sunday sales legislation] always comes bubbling up when the economy goes south," says David Laband, an Auburn University economics professor who authored Blue Laws: The History, Economics, and Politics of Sunday-Closing Laws. Blue laws, which restrict shopping of any kind on Sunday, date back to the colonial era, Laband says. However, those laws gradually died off as economic forces made some states realize that they could stand to gain by having stores open on Sunday. " - February 22, 2009

"A Dry Sunday in Connecticut"

New York Times (Connecticut, USA) - "Connecticut adopted blue laws to restrict work and play on Sundays in the 1600s. The word blue was an 18th-century synonym for moral rigidity, and four centuries later, Connecticut clings to that rigidity. It is one of just three states in the nation (the other two are Georgia and Indiana) that bans the sale of beer, wine and liquor on Sundays. (The only exceptions in Connecticut are vineyards, which can sell wine.)" - February 18, 2009

"Measure would keep Off-Track Betting open Palm Sunday"

Newsday.com (Long Island, New York, USA) - "In an effort to direct more money to the state's coffers, Assemb. Robert Barra said yesterday that he's working to change the law that requires Off-Track Betting facilities to close on Palm Sunday...Barra, who is Catholic, said he has requested information from state racing authorities about how much money the state stands to gain by allowing Palm Sunday racing. State law forbids racing on Palm Sunday, Easter Sunday and Christmas." - February 17, 2009

"Bill would allow vote on Sunday alcohol sales"

MSNBC.com (Anniston, Alabama, USA) - "A bill that would allow Anniston to call a referendum on whether to allow Sunday alcohol sales passed with unanimous approval in a state Senate committee Wednesday, though bets are off as to whether it will reach the governor's desk. The bill applies to 13 other cities in the state, including Talladega, Gadsden and Sylacauga, that under current state law can neither sell alcohol on Sundays nor hold a public referendum to change the statute. All forms of alcohol would be covered, according to the wording of the bill." - February 17, 2009

"Sunday hunting legislation introduced for Baltimore County"

Maryland, USA - "Sunday hunting prohibitions are some of the last remnants of religious based legislation and “Blue Laws” that restricted activities of the public on Sundays. Maryland is only one of a few remaining states that still have any restriction on hunting on Sundays. Thirty-nine states have no restrictions on Sunday hunting and of the remainder; only seven have an all out ban. Maryland is not one of them." - February 17, 2009

"European bishops back proposed EU law on Sunday rest"

Catholic News Agency (Brussels, Belgium) - "The secretariat of the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community has welcomed a proposed EU law that would safeguard Sunday as a day of rest from work. According to L’Osservatore Romano, the secretariat issued a statement praising the measure proposed by five EU parliamentarians to recognize the value of "Sunday rest as part of the ‘cultural patrimony’ and ‘European social model’."" - February 16, 2009

COMECE Press Release (Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community) - "The Secretariat of COMECE, the Protestant Church in Germany (EKD) and the Church of England welcome the initiative of several Members of the European Parliament, to ask the House to decide on a Written Declaration “on the protection of a work-free Sunday as an essential pillar of the European Social Model and as part of the European cultural heritage”. Such a declaration would constitute an important commitment to a “Social Europe”. It is now important to find the majority necessary for this cross-party resolution, which has been launched by five parliamentarians – from the political groups of EPP, PSE, ALDE and UEN." - February 11, 2009

Catholic Culture.org - "The measure would call upon all member-states of the European Union to protect the weekly day of rest. "The economic and financial crises have made us more aware of the fact that not all aspects of life can be subject to market forces," COMECE noted in its statement of support-- in which the Catholic bishops were joined by the the Protestant Church in Germany (EKD) and the Church of England." - February 11, 2009

"A History Of Sunday: What Makes Sundays So Special?"

CBS News - Sunday Morning show (USA) - "Not writer Judith Shulevitz. In her upcoming book "The Sabbath World," she argues just the opposite: She wants to keep Sundays timeless. In a world of 24/7 commerce, she's pushing for a return to laws that would shut down businesses one day a week. "If everybody has to stop working, then they have to, sort of, pay attention to their family, to themselves, to their community," she argues... Which brings us back to the Puritans of the 1630s: their measures may now seem extreme, but what if they were actually onto something?" - February 1, 2009

"Sunday sales law could hike revenue"

Connecticut Post (Connecticut, USA) - "The state's worsening fiscal situation may finally lead to passage of a law allowing liquor stores the option of opening on Sundays. As we have maintained for many years, such a law would finally rid Connecticut of one of the last vestiges of its antiquated "Blue Laws."" - February 13, 2009

WFSB Eyewitness News (Connecticut, USA) - "A group of liquor store owners have revived the fight for Sunday liquor sales in the state. "A day of rest?" (Opinion)

Lake Country Sun (Texas) - "Sundays should be days of rest and relaxation... Well, that’s the way it should be. When I was a child, stores weren’t open, events weren’t planned and naps were required. Blue-laws prohibited the sale of anything that wasn’t "necessary for life." Once those laws were taken off the books, our busy lives filled up the void." - January 15, 2009

Macon.com (Macon, GA) - "The state Christian Coalition leader’s comparison of Harp’s proposal to legalized prostitution is absurd. Retail sale of alcoholic beverages, unlike prostitution, is lawful already; it is banned on Sunday by a law everybody implicitly understands is a religious prohibition on the population at large. 'Blue laws' have never really made much sense, and Georgia’s peculiar version of them makes none whatever."- December 21, 2008

This year, it is only the staunchly Catholic states of Saarland in the west and Bavaria in the south that have decided to keep shops shut on Sunday. In the rest of the country, they will open at least one Sunday a month. The Protestant Church of Berlin lamented that Sunday trade has therefore become 'the rule instead of the exception.' Not always sure how these laws will be brought about but I do agree with the Bible and EGW (the great controversy) and what you've mentioned. There are many sunday laws that are on the books but not enforced, but can easily be put into effect at anytime.

What are all your thoughts???

First of all - thank you for sharing that link - it is a keeper!

Secondly - there has already been a prediction by an inspired source as to just how the Sunday Laws will return -- and it is not via "soooo many states that just so happen to have them". Rather a catastrophic event will take place and lead mankind in general to the conclusion that they all need to keep Sunday in order to avoid disasters of that nature in the future.

And, Bob, I also heard that the Pope is calling for a one world order: "blog Alert: Last Tuesday Pope Benedict XVI issued the third encyclical of his papacy. In it, he calls for "a true world political authority" to combat the economic, social, and political problems of the world today. How does this alarming idea fit in with end-time prophecy? Read our most recent blog at http://www.religiousliberty.info/blog/?p=98 to see Barry Bussey's take on this issue." Got this from NARLA, thought it was very interesting.
