The Seventh Day Adventist group began, along with several other Adventist denominations, from the teachings of William Miller (1782-1849). The difference of this denomination with the other Adventists came in disagreement of the teaching concerning the sanctuary as mentioned in Daniel 8:13-14. They held that this sanctuary was located in Heaven, not on earth. Sometime in 1844 a small group began also celebrating the Sabbath on Saturday rather than Sunday. Writings from Joseph Bates, James White, and Ellen Harmon, who later became Mrs. James White, were esteemed highly and referred to as “inspired counsels of the Lord.” Others, namely Hiram Edson, Frederick Wheeler, and S.W. Rhodes, began distribution of leaflets promoting this teaching of the Sabbath along with their Advent teaching concerning the sanctuary in Heaven and eventually the Seventh Day Adventists came into being.

Currently their headquarters is located in Washington, D.C. Their beliefs are summarized as follows:

* In God, who is transcendent, personal and communicating; represented in God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, all uniquely and divinely, eternal and personal.

* In the literal creation and the fall of man.

* That man is mortal but can become immortal by the grace, redemption and atoning work of Jesus Christ.

* That the Ten Commandments are a transcript of character of God and are exemplified in the life of Christ, thus becoming the standard of righteousness to all men.

* That according to the fourth commandment the seventh day (Saturday) is a day of rest and is the Sabbath.

* Tithing as the means of supporting the Church.

* In adult baptism by immersion.

* They believe that their movement is a fulfillment of Biblical prophecy to prepare the world for the Second Advent – the second coming of Jesus Christ and so restore neglected truths to the Church.

* They strictly prohibit the use of alcoholic drink, tobacco and promiscuous use of drugs.

Seventh Day Adventists have been active in evangelism, publishing, education, health and welfare work. They have also used radio and television programs to spread their teaching.
