A bumper crop of blueberries and some generous farmers are making summer a little sweeter for New Jersey's needy.

The state's blueberry farmers are anticipating that this year's crop will exceed the 53 million pounds of blueberries grown in New Jersey last year.

And on Tuesday, several dozen farmers from Atlantic and Burlington counties donated some of that windfall to a program that helps provide food for the needy.

The farmers donated 3,500 pints of berries to a Trenton-based group called Farmers Against Hunger.

By Tuesday afternoon, hundreds of pints had been trucked to Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Camden and the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Browns Mills, where they were distributed. Stops at two more churches were scheduled for Wednesday, Philly.com reported.

"We are putting a nutritionally charged food into the hands of people who might not have been able to afford it or have access to it otherwise," said farmer Denny Doyle, who is vice chairman of the New Jersey Blueberry Advisory Council.
