Let' look at the similarities between Job and Paul before and after their contact with God:

Before

Job: Job 31:6 "Let God weigh me in honest scales and he will know that I am blameless"

Paul: Phil 3:5 "...concerning the law, a Pharisee; 6 ...concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless."

After

Job: Job 40:4 "Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth."

Job 42:6 "Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes."

Paul: Phil 3:7 "But what things were gain to me [see the list in verses 5,6], those I counted loss for Christ. 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ...."

Both Paul and Job claimed to be blameless in performance. Both believed in God. Both were self-righteous, but after a confrontation with God both had a change of heart.

Now Paul considered himself to be "the chief of sinners" and he counted all his law based works as worthless dung in exchange for the righteous of God that comes by faith.

And Job, who just prior to meeting God viewed himself as blameless, has a change of mind after his encounter. No longer do we hear Job bragging, instead we see a humbled Job who admits that his righteousness is vile compared to the righteousness of God.

If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: [if I say], I [am] perfect, it shall also prove me perverse. Job 9:20

My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined. Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary [food]. But he [is] in one [mind], and who can turn him? and [what] his soul desireth, even [that] he doeth. Job 23:3-13

Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity. Job 31:6

Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God. Job 13:3
