Ron Lambert Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 True, cricket, but we still have choices. I will eat some meat now, but mainly poultry and fish. Beef very seldom. Of course I still will not eat pork products or shellfish. I like soy beans, lima beans, navy beans, and other legumes, but I can't eat them without plenty of Beano. I meant to comment earlier--I think the best tasting mushrooms are Morel mushrooms. Quote
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted October 16, 2009 Members Posted October 16, 2009 Morel mushrooms are the only kind I know well enough to pick wild. They ARE delicious! Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
nuff sed Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 There's a FUNGUS AMOUNGUS! Good Grief!!!!! Quote
Twilight Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 Too bad it's a fungus. There are some celiacs who can't have fungus, corn, nuts, soy or other legumes. Very difficult to be a vegetarian. Very. So why be a strict vegetarian? God gave meat as an emergency food, when the environment could not provide a healthy diet. I must admit I know little about this. :-) Quote The best wisdom is always second hand...
Members phkrause Posted October 18, 2009 Members Posted October 18, 2009 I haven't found any problems in changing years ago to a vegetarian diet! I do eat meat occasionly, mainly fish, but only by choice, not because I have to have it. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Members phkrause Posted October 18, 2009 Members Posted October 18, 2009 Ron if you buy the legumes in package's, dry, instead of in cans, and than soak them over night in water and than use them, you will find this better for your problem. On 3abn, the show Abundant Living, with C&P Eakins they talk about this. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. The foam is made of the substance that causes the gas problems. You can also put a potato in with them while they cook, then throw away the potato. It will absorb the gas-producing substance. Some friends of ours do this, and once they fed the potato to their dog to find out just how well it actually worked. The poor dog was passing gas for hours! Members phkrause Posted October 18, 2009 Members Posted October 18, 2009 poor dog. GLG thanks for the extra info. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Ron Lambert Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 That technique you describe, GreatLakesGramma, will work with any beans. The problem is, what is being washed out, the components that cause gas, are the polysaccharides, forms of sugar that humans cannot digest, but the bacteria in our intestines can thrive on--causing the gas as a waste product. And the problem with that is, the polysaccharides are a large part of what makes beans taste sweet, so what you are left with tastes bland. That's OK for making soymilk. The procedure you describe for "detoxing" soybeans is what some people I used to know used for making homemade soymilk. Of course then they added flavorings, like regular sugar, vanilla, etc. Or they might add blended raw cashews (after making sure the cashews are thoroughly washed). I still say the best way to enjoy beans is with plenty of Beano. It contains an enzyme extracted from a kind of fungus (aspergilus niger) that breaks down the polysaccharides before they get to your intestines. Too bad Beano is so expensive. Quote
Administrators Gail Posted October 19, 2009 Administrators Posted October 19, 2009 I drain and replace the water from the beans after soaking for 1 hour in boiling water. That also does the trick. Administrators Gail Posted October 19, 2009 Administrators Posted October 19, 2009 I have tried some jerky type stuff that was made from shiitake mushrooms. It was okay but not the cat's meow...
