Guest Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 I type a post message and hit my back button and when I hit the forward button..my message is gone!!! Seemed to happen at the latest software rev. Anyone else notice this frustrating issue?? I used to go back and forth to look at the message I was replying to but not anymore...erases the thoughts and I have to reconstruct and with 1/2 heimer's setting in...it is difficult sometimes.. Amelia Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 Yes, I am well aquainted with that interesting quirk of the board. Along with the "Next" button not going to the next unread message. It seems (for me that is) the next button goes up and the previous button goes down. Very Interesting. Moderators LynnDel Posted February 2, 2005 Moderators Posted February 2, 2005 Yes, that happens - but you don't have to go back and forth to the message to which you are replying, because you will see that message if you scroll to the bottom of your post-a-message screen. It was a happy day when I discovered that little fact. LD Quote LD
Guest Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 Yep U R right LD...sometimes I am replying to a couple of people which is why I use the back and forth buttons.. Quote
Moderators Nan Posted February 2, 2005 Moderators Posted February 2, 2005 Maybe you should open new windows for the extra replies JB. And I have noted the quirkiness of the next and previous buttons too, but that has been the case for a long time, not just the new soft ware. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Quote
Moderators Bravus Posted February 2, 2005 Moderators Posted February 2, 2005 I find Mozilla/Netscape/Firfox is *much* better at remembering the message and keeping it there when you go off the page than Internet Exploiter - hope that's helpful. Quote Truth is important
cricket Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 I've learned to deal with this problem by saying, "Someone here wrote something like this..." then, I use whatever it is I can remember. Not too good with the accuracy thing, though. Quote
Amelia Posted February 3, 2005 Posted February 3, 2005 Bravus, how are you able to use a different browser? My new 'puter came loaded with explorer and Im not sure how to switch it out. Fran Posted February 3, 2005 Posted February 3, 2005 I have a question. While I am composing a post, I finish and review my post before I submit it. I decide I do not want to put something out there so I delete it before I submit the post. Those words are gone from sight. So I submit. Then I get a message, from another forum, about what I took out before I posted the post. Who is allowed to read messages as they are being composed? Is this a common practice, are all moderators able to do this in any forum or just in their forum? I am the only one that clearly knew what was there and what I removed. But someone told me what I had there and did not post. How private are my replies BEFORE I post them? aka Posted February 3, 2005 Posted February 3, 2005 You apparently are using the Windows operating system on your new computer, Amelia. That has InternetExplorer firmly incorporated into it's system. It is dangerous to try to eliminate IE by deleting it. Too many components are connected and interconnected with other programs by IE in the Windows*** versions of operatingsystem. Just download the various stand-alone browers and install them. They work just fine on any operating system. They seem to give an inbuilt code to avoid certain stuff that make IE browser not good to use. Stand alone browsers are Opera, MozillaFireFox, Netscape and a few others. Quote

No one here (not admin, mod, or member) can read anything being written by a member prior to its being posted. Moderators Bravus Posted February 3, 2005 Moderators Posted February 3, 2005 Hi Amelia Turmeric has you covered on the browsers thing. I have about 3 browsers on this machine, all happily co-existing - I just choose one to be the default. I'd recommend downloading and trying out Firefox, because it has a lot of features Internet Explorer doesn't - including the one I mentioned in this thread. Fran, I'm not sure what's going on there, but it's impossible for anyone to read your messages before they're actually posted to the board - the data haven't been sent across the internet from your computer to the board software until you hit 'Continue'. If you wrote a post and sent it, then hit 'Edit' and changed it, that's different, and the original post would have been up on the board until the edited version appeared. Quote Truth is important
Moderators Bravus Posted February 3, 2005 Moderators Posted February 3, 2005 Fran - a technical friend corrected me that if you use 'preview' the data do go to the server. I would stll think they'd be invisible to everyone, but if you want to avoid that possibility you could always compose in a word processing program then copy and paste across to the forum software only when you're happy with it. I'm not saying anyone *has* snooped your posts, just letting you know I was wrong when I claimed it was technically impossible. Up to you what you do with the info. Quote Truth is important
GreatLakesGramma Posted February 4, 2005 Posted February 4, 2005 Another feature I like about Mozilla is that you can right-click on a link and bring up a menu which, among other things, will allow you to open the link in another window or another tab. Then you can go back and forth between them without losing anything, or having to wait for them to load again. I use that here all the time now, opening all threads that interest me at once in different tabs. Then I can read them all, close the ones I don't want to reply to, then start replying without having to reopen threads (or in some cases, having a hard time remembering which thread it was I wanted to reply to!). Moderators LynnDel Posted February 4, 2005 Moderators Posted February 4, 2005 I do it that way, too, Christine - with IE. Not that I'm a Microsoft fan or anything. I've always been rather disgruntled with the way IE is tied into the rest of my computer. LD Quote LD
Neil D Posted February 4, 2005 Posted February 4, 2005 I have used Opra before, but I have gravitaded to Firefox. Just seems a bit more friendly. It also stopps popups from coming on.... As for IE, I don't do microsoft unless I have to... Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. George Bernard Shaw
GreatLakesGramma Posted February 5, 2005 Posted February 5, 2005 LynnDel, I switched to Mozilla when we heard the news about that internet attack by the Russian Mafia, months ago, where they sent viruses to certain popular auction and search websites that would allow them to read and relay keystrokes of computers infected by visiting those popular sites, and thus acquire passwords and credit card and bank account information from unsuspecting victims. This was a threat only to users of IE. Since it is the browser of choice for the vast majority of internet users, nobody bothers to create viruses of this type that will work with Netscape-based browsers.
