mikeyswen79 Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 I didn't really know how to formulate a title that really summarizes my question, but thanks for opening it anyways! Anyways, I have a question: Does the Adventist church hire people to be both a pastor and a teacher at the same time? I'm training in Theology and Secondary Education and it dawned on me that I really would like to do both at the same time if possible. I would be a bible teacher in terms of teaching (though I will have training in history or social studies a well) but don't want to give up the pastoral ministry. I suppose this would make most sense at a church-school setting like, for instance, Eau Claire SDA Church + Eau Claire SDA Elementary School connected to the church. Has anyone ever seen this occur? bonnie Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 HEY MILEYSWEN79 I think that the training for a pastor and a teacher in the S.D.A. school is different but I am NOT an authority on this subject??? dgrimm60 They used to. Waaay back in grade school all male teachers were pastor and teacher Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It's not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make, period ... ... Wish more people would realize this. Quotes by Susan Gottesman

Could you do justice to both jobs, doing both at the same time? Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
bonnie Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 HEY BONNIE HOW far back is waaaay back ( date maybe ) dgrimm60 If you listen to my boys it was back around the time of creation. This was church school in the 50's. Two of the best teachers we had were both pastor and teacher. Just to clarify a bit. I was speaking of male teachers we had. I don't know that was true for all Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It's not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted October 8, 2009 Moderators Posted October 8, 2009 First of all, we need to confine the focus of the question to North America and specificly the United States of America. The SDA Chruch is a very large world-wide chruch. Things are often done diferently in other Divisions outside of North America. Next, we need to focus on the level of teaching: college/university, high school or elementary. On the college/university level the decisions will be made, in part, on the degree. Generally you will need some kind of doctoral degree--PhD, or another type of doctoral degree such as a Doctor of Theology. And, you will need some kind of clear focus--languages, NT, OT, Church History, etc. The following comments will applly to lower level teaching. In the U.S. the training is often considered to be differenet for teachers and Pastors. That is to say, that generally a pastor will not be considered qualified to teach. However, exceptions may be made in a situaiton where the pastor has taken academic training in educaiton, or possibly has a MA/MS in some specific field that is immediately needed. So, a pastor who had a degree in math/psychology might be hired in an emergency basis to teach math/psychology. However, it would be quite unusual in this day and age for a pastor in the U.S. to fill a dual role as pastor and teacher at the same time. Notwithstanding that it would be unusual, it could happen. We are also living in a time where there are a few credentialed SDA pastors who are not paid directly by the denomination. In these cases, they may be more flexability. For example: I am a credentialed SDA clergyperson who has been employed for most of my adult life by the U.S. Federal Government. At one time I was on the teaching faculty of the U.S. Army Chaplain School. But, before I joined that faculty, I had to get a graduate degree in psychology, which the Army gave me a scholarship to get. After I got the degree I taught pastoral counseling to military chaplains. So, there is a general answer for the U.S. but rare types of exceptions. Quote Gregory
bonnie Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 HEY BONNIE Maybe in a very rural setting and elementary school maybe it would work but I COULD not see this is ACADEMY dgrimm60 It was grade school. Time wise a pastor only had one church to pastor so he wasn't stretched so thin. Our pastor now pastors three chruches Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. Members phkrause Posted October 9, 2009 Members Posted October 9, 2009 I've seen pastors do both, be pastor of a church and teach at a school. Obviously they would teach a religion class. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

Members phkrause Posted October 9, 2009 Members Posted October 9, 2009 Well bonnie I guess I was wrong. I know that the church has hired pastors/ministers to do things that they were not trained to do. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. mikeyswen79 Posted October 10, 2009 Author Posted October 10, 2009 I think i could do justice to both depending on the specific situation, but under other circumstances focusing on one would be preferable. Quote
Members phkrause Posted October 10, 2009 Members Posted October 10, 2009 You probably could mikeyswen79, because Pastor's teach and Teachers preach. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
mikeyswen79 Posted October 13, 2009 Author Posted October 13, 2009 That's true dgrimm. Luckily I am getting those two different degrees at the moment. Theology is my main degree and I'm also getting secondary certification (for middle and high school teaching) if all goes well. Quote
