Circumcision...

Over the year circumcision has been given the downward thumb. I have always wondered about this, and thought there were perhaps medical or other latent benefits of such, based on my experience of other Biblical statements.

Thinking it might be healthier, even though it seems so barbaric.

While I cannot quote 'chapter and verse' there is some relatively recent evidence that circumcised boys are

less likely to get urinary tract infections, and that circumcised men are less likely to get HIV-AIDS. (O course men of any ilk who practicsed Biblical moral standards are not likely to get HIV either but that is another story.)

It is now unacceptable to circumcise baby boys in this country without some sort of (local at least) anaesthetic. I used to perform the procedure but not in recent years, but there are still parents

who want it done to their sons, even without a religious prompt (that is mostly Muslim where I work).

I was not able to follow the link easily and my comments are made off the cuff, might duplicate what is in there.

Do I know any of these "men of any ilk"? Great expression, Nan!

Interesting article, I seem to find that most things in the Bible that God instituted have a good religious and health reason. I personally would go with the Bible over any report by man, they seem to go back and forth all the time.

Having just come from Kellog and Wallace, Idaho, where there is a great emphasis on the mining life there, featuring, but not limited to the house of ill-repute.....The question that I have for Gail, made in full jest, is-how do you "know any 'men of any ilk'" unless you are aquainted with these houses that served all mannor of "men of any ilk"?.....

Ok, I am JUST asking.... ayeyiyi

Somehow I think if I would have started this thread I would have been accused of being a pervert, obsessed with sex and it would have to be moved to an area where children couldn't read it. Of course I am not making any such accusations or suggesting such action be taken.

When my son was born it cost me $100 to have him circumcised and they tried to talk me out of it. I held him while they did it and they didn't give him any anesthetic. I have heard that males that are not circumcised have more pleasure during sex. That was also mentioned in the article Stan linked to. I thought the pleasurable feeling actually came from the prostate, not the foreskin.

As I've had it presented to me in different Bible classes and archaeology lectures; God used the typical form of treaty of the day. One of the aspects of the treaty was a physical mark on the body. That Abraham and the early Hebrews would have expenced this; what did God want them to do, cut off a finger or an ear, at least earlobe, etc. etc. etc.

Circumcision was very popular in the Middle East, only a few people, such as the Sheckemites and the foriginers who moved into the area (the Philistines-who was not there in Abraham's time) did not practice. It was so cultural that it was a practice that would have been picked up. That it appears that God did not really need the phyiscal mark on someone, so God just took the physical mark that they were likely of developing anyway and said that would be the mark for the covenant.

I find that God used alot of symbolisms for religion, for health reasons also.

It is very symbolic. It is physically cutting off a piece of our flesh. Circumcising our hearts is what God really desires.
