Animals have feelings

What have you experienced about the dignity and feelings of animals?

I thought that the EGW quotes that John317 posted were interesting:

Quote:
Ellen White got it right:

If animals could speak, what deeds of horror would be revealed,--what tales of suffering, because of the perversity of man's temper! How often those creatures of God's care suffer pain, endure hunger and thirst, because they cannot make known their wants. And how often is it determined by the mercy or the caprice of man, whether they receive attention and kindness, or neglect and abuse. Punishment given in passion to an animal is frequently excessive, and is then absolute cruelty. Animals have a kind of dignity and self-respect, akin to that possessed by human beings. If abused, under the influence of blind passion, their spirits will be crushed, and they will become nervous, irritable, and ungovernable. The Signs of the Times , November 25, 1880, paragraph 21

(1905) M.H. 315

657. The moral evils of a flesh diet are not less marked than are the physical ills. Flesh food is injurious to health, and whatever affects the body has a corresponding effect on the mind and the soul. Think of the cruelty to animals that meat eating involves, and its effect on those who inflict and those who behold it. How it destroys the tenderness with which we should regard these creatures of God! Counsels on Diet and Foods (1938), page 383, paragraph 2

A disposition to cause pain, whether to our fellowmen or to the brute creation, is satanic. Many do not realize that their cruelty will ever be known, because the poor dumb animals cannot reveal it. But could the eyes of these men be opened, as were those of Balaam, they would see an angel of God standing as a witness to testify against them in the courts above. A record goes up to heaven, and a day is coming when judgment will be pronounced against those who abuse God's creatures.--PP 443 (1890).Mind, Character, and Personality Volume 2 (1977), page 514, paragraph 3

Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Quote:
In 1895 she asked her son to buy some "dried codfish and dried fish of ANY description --- nothing canned". Letter 149

1896 "I use fish when I can get it. We get beautiful fish from the salt water lake near here." Letter 128 1896

Maybe though she just didn't consider fish to be animals or God's creatures?

But then ...

"If you have not got any better conviction--you won't eat meat because Sister White does not eat any--if I am the authority, I would not give a farthing for your health reform." Ms 43a, 1901, p. 13.

It's funny that you should mention that.

My husband loves to fish. One day he told me about a fish on his line that he had a real fight with. Flippantly I said, "Well, you'd fight, too, if you were fighting for your life!"

He thought a long time about that. It bothered him so badly that he even talked about it with his fishing buddy. He lost a bit of his taste for the sport upon thinking about it.

Ahhh Gail. Sounds like you spoiled his good fun.

I have to admit though. I have had similar feelings when I have fished. Haven't done any fishin' in years. The thought of pulling that hook out of his mouth ... is quite distasteful.

And perhaps Ellen White reconsidered what she wrote in 1890. Five or six years later she may have had a stronger desire for eating fish. Our appetites do change.

I think animals have feelings. I know dogs do.

If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony.

Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

Yes Pam ... They surely do have feelings. I can see that in my dog.

I agree that we will be able to communicate with the animals Dgrimm, not sure that I believe they will be able to talk back to us, but maybe you didn't mean that.

Eve was quite surprised when she saw a snake talking, so I don't think they could talk to animals in the Garden of Eden. But I wouldn't be surprised if we could on the new earth.
