Dr. Shane Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 Death of Fla. girl found in landfill a homicide Quote: A body found under trash in a landfill is that of 7-year-old Somer Thompson, a north Florida girl who vanished on her walk home from school, authorities said Thursday. Clay County Sheriff's spokeswoman Mary Justino also said the girl's death was a homicide, though she did not elaborate. Justino confirmed the identification hours after Sheriff Rick Breseler said clothing and a birthmark led authorities to believe they had found the missing girl. An autopsy was being performed Thursday by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in Savannah after the body was found near the Florida state line. Detectives spotted the legs first and found the body partially covered by garbage Wednesday in a Georgia landfill, after investigators followed garbage trucks leaving the neighborhood where the child disappeared Monday. The girl was taken after she ran ahead of her siblings while walking home from school. Does anyone remember Eric Hare's "Pip pip, The Naughty Little Chicken"? It is very sad, terribly tragic. GreatLakesGramma Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 I never read the book, but when I read the news story, I was particularly impressed with that one fact, that if she had stayed with the group, she would still be alive. The body of another little girl, in Missouri, was also found yesterday. She too disappeared while walking home from school alone. Members phkrause Posted October 24, 2009 Members Posted October 24, 2009 The other day I was driving back home from taking my daughter to a doctors appointment, and saw a little boy walking alone and was wondering how the parents could let him do that. But you know sometimes they don't have any other choice. Probably both parents working, etc. Not sure how we can solve these problems. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Outta Here Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 The nine year old from Missouri was not walking home from school. It was approximately 6:15 in the evening (still light in her part of the country) as she walked home a quarter-mile stretch from her friend's home to her own home. Quote
Members phkrause Posted October 24, 2009 Members Posted October 24, 2009 That's sad Aubrey, parents should be taking them back and forth. They probably think that this is never going to happen to them. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
ChildofChrist Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 When I was a young child, my mother used to warn me about 'stranger danger'. Yet when I was a young parent, I forgot to tell my children about it and as a result, I could have lost both of them when a stranger from NY passed our Miami home and pulled into the apartment complex next door. We had a huge thicket growing between us and them. This man parked and entered the back thicket and I guess he spotted the wild cats that lived back in there. He called to first to my son, "I have found a kitty. Do you want to pet him?" My number one child was drawn to the rear with his younger sister a few yards behind. My uncle stood up and said, "Something is going on out there" and I started outdoors. About that time, their father arrived home and there was a scream. My daughter screamed then and pointed to the tangled thicket. The man was caught and held for the law enforcement by dad and residents of the apartment complex. The guy ended up walking after trial because my 7 year old was still traumatized by the event and confused by the judge. Common thought held by dad and neighbors was they should have dealt with the pervert on their own. From that point on, every child that was brought under my influence was told about how some strangers steal children and they never get to see their family again. I would also mention about some family friends not being good friends. To always let their mom know where they were and proper touching. It is a real challenge to raise children to be whole adults in our current world. Quote Wakan Tanka Kici Un ~~Child of Christ~~
Dr. Shane Posted October 24, 2009 Author Posted October 24, 2009 Everytime our kids run ahead of us at the store, zoo or park I always call them back and ask them if they are trying to get kidnapped. I tell them if someone takes them they will never see us again and that I can't protect them if I can't see them. When news on this story broke I told my kids that is exactly why I don't allow them to run off without us. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... GreatLakesGramma Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 I got harnesses for my twin sons when they were little. Best way not to lose them in the mall! I don't know what OTHER people thought, but other MOTHERS of young children would stop and ask me where I got them and tell me what a great idea it was.
