The $80 million Centennial Complex, Loma Linda University's first new classroom building in a generation, will formally open on Wednesday.

The 3 p.m. ceremony coincides with the beginning of a four-day celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Seventh-day Adventist university's medical school, although university spokesman Richard Weismeyer emphasized that students in all of its educational programs will use the new building.

Construction began three years ago and is expected to be completed in February, when the top floor of the four-story building will open as a high-tech simulation laboratory, where medical students will practice on life-like robots.

Wow, I wondered when that building would open. I drive by it frequently. It sits across the street from the old Anatomy building where I used to work in the room that is pictured below. This laboratory will also now be located in the new building. The old one has been in the Shryrock building since at least the 1930s. I wonder what a "high-tech" facility for such a place will look like. Probably won't be so crowded and gloomy.

You used to work with dead bodies?

Well, I didn't think of it that way. I thought of it as working around dead bodies but with living students and teachers. I know that may seem like just a technical difference but it's a very important difference. I only worked there for about a year.

You know what's kind of funny is that my dad worked in it during World War II as a night-watchman. He said it was kind of creepy because he had to go in there at 2 o'clock in the morning. I went there every morning at 4 am and opened up and got all of them ready for the medical students and teachers.

Yep. That looks like the room where I had Anatomy class. The smell was the hardest thing to tolerate and get used to.
