Administrators Gail Posted October 29, 2009 Administrators Posted October 29, 2009 I received this from ADRA Canada e-news: "UPCOMING EVENTS: November 19: World Toilet Day JOIN THE BIG SQUAT! At exactly noon on November 19th, gather your family, friends, classmates, colleagues and everyone you know to squat in public for 1 minute in support of World Toilet Day. This drives home the point "where would you go?" and how people without toilets are forced to go in public places." Would you do this? Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Gail Posted October 29, 2009 Author Administrators Posted October 29, 2009 HEY GAIL WELL I am not sure I could squat for 1 min at my age now How far would that excuse getcha if you lived in one of those countries where that is necessary? When my son lived in Liberia he would visit a beach near a place called Poopy Point. You could probably guess why the place was named that. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted October 29, 2009 Members Posted October 29, 2009 Gee, that'll look real classy. And will it really help anyone who doesn't have a toilet? I mean, *really* help? No. Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

Amelia Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 In many places it's not a lack of toilets but a lack of water. If they don't have easy access to water, why have a toilet? Plus, in many parts of India they could have toilets but still have those squat pads in the loos. LifeHiscost Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 I don't take my toilet for granted. This thread just underscores another seemingly lost gift granted by God to His children in the western hemisphere, lost from recognition by those who take the simple things of life as their due. I worked in an industry in the U.S. where it caused major disgust when the participants of the potty pooper threw their used toilet tissue in the waste paper basket, instead of flushing it down the toilet bowl. It wasn't until many years later that more knowledge revealed the reason for the misplaced used tissue was a result of those having come from a country where there wasn't a developed sewer system and tissue would have clogged the potty if it had been disposed there, and it was thought the same conditions existed here in the states. Praise God for His small miracles. Count your many blessings, name them one by one. "The blessings of the LORD maketh rich, and He addeth no sorrow with it."Prov 10:22 21st Century KJV Blessings! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
Administrators Gail Posted October 30, 2009 Author Administrators Posted October 30, 2009 Wow... that's humbling. I think that I can thank God for this simple but effective apparatus- the toilet. When you think about it, this area of cleanliness ties into a person's dignity. I've read that one way that kidnappers strip hostages of their dignity is to put them in a room without any toilet or other means to rid oneself of their waste. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Moderators Gerr Posted October 30, 2009 Moderators Posted October 30, 2009 A few years ago, we went on a mission trip to Odessa in the Ukraine. It was as you described it. The used toilet paper had to be put in a special container because the sewage system could not handle the paper. And the paper available at the time was very coarse. Also, the hot water was only available for certain periods of time. On two occasions while I was in the shower, the hot water not only ran out but it was reduced to a trickle. And we stayed at a resort which used to be occupied by officers of the Russian Army! I still have a souvenir of that coarse toilet paper somewhere. Yeah, we sure take a lot for granted!!! Quote

Moderators Nan Posted October 30, 2009 Moderators Posted October 30, 2009 Probably a study of toilet habits would show a whole lot about the culture involved. I agree it is too easy for we who have "toilet privileges" to take them entirely for granted, including the right to privacy. I never have quite gotten over something I saw in Tiananmen Square, Beijing - a large tentlike structure, inside down each wall was a row of a dozen or more squatty potties. No partitions, no nothing. I would have had a very hard time using those facilities. Perhaps we are too selfconscious. Quote
whbae Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 Some years ago, I was in Venezuela doing some mission work. The toilets in a hotel did not even have a seat for you to sit down comfortably never mind about you have to provide your own toilet tissue. I was told that people steal these toilet seats. There isn't much privacy in some Asian counties. We don't even have a word called "private"! Won Quote
nuff sed Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 When we went to Sarawak in 1966 to administer the Sunny Hill Mission School we lived in an old ramshackle wooden house which was said to be haunted. Upon looking over the 'facilities ' one of our kids looked at the hole in the bathroom floor and exclaimed, "Do you mean we have to Squat for two years?" My mother felt sorry for us upon hearing about the toilet; purchased and sent out a 'camping portable potty seat' which was supported by a couple of legs shaped like an X.... One evening after a couple months of use it decided to not support my weight and collapsed with a bang. Our two-year old giggled and said to her mother, "Daddy broke the 'tupid' potty!".. Quote
