Interesting case of child abuse?

Joseph Cardillo: A 49 YO male, charged with sexual assault on a child.

Lora Lee Hansen-Beard: Mother of the child.

JY: Pseudonym for 8 year-old female who it was alleged was assaulted.

NOTE: The first interesting aspects of this case is what it tells us in regard to what it may take to obtain a conviction on a sexual-abuse charge related to a child. At the time of her arrest, the mother and JY were regularly attending the Boulder SDA Church. The mother was a devout Hindu who was attending the Boulder church in an attempt to convert its members to the Hindu faith. The second issue is that we as people of faith may have little knowledge of what is really going on in the lives of the adults and children who join our congregations each Sabbath.

In an investigation that led to the criminal charges, JY told investigators that she and Cardillo often bathed and slept in the same bed with both of them being totally naked. She also informed them that Cardillo had drunk her urine.

Lora Lee testified that she knew of the above and had discussed them with her daughter JY. She stated that she did not object to Cardillo engaging in those activities with her daughter as she considered them to be a normal part of life and of her Hindu religion. Lora Lee was convicted in September of a misdemeanor count of child abuse and was sentenced to two years of probation. JY was placed in the care of other family members.

Cardillo testified at his trial that JY had asked him to drink her urine and that he considered the nude bathing and sleeping together to be a normal practice in the communities in which he lived. He also testified that he was not sexually aroused by such practices. The jury was unable to reach a verdict at his trial. It is believed that their vote was 11 to 1 to convict.

A new trial has been scheduled for Cardillo for late January. However, The District Attorney is reviewing the case in an attempt to determine if the case is strong enough to go to trial the second time. If it does go to trial, and if Cardillo is convicted, he could face life in prison.

And some believe God to be too loving to bring those who perpetrate such outrageous behavior, to an end.
