Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted October 31, 2009 Members Posted October 31, 2009 I heard on TV yesterday that the recession is over!!! I had no idea! Maybe it just hasn't hit my State yet. Paper and lumber mill shut-downs were on the same newscast. I really don't want this to go political. It's just such a big surprise to me that the recession is over and everything is back to "normal.." Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. Woody Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 Well ... I guess we can wager how long before it heads to the politics forum. But seriously ... politics is part of life and should be able to be discussed in a polite manner here in Townhall. Just my 2 cents worth. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Woody Posted November 1, 2009 Posted November 1, 2009 'in a polite manner' - aye, there's the rub Well ... okay. Let's see if we can do it. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

Woody Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Then why is this political topic still in Townhall? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted November 2, 2009 Administrators Posted November 2, 2009 Because it isn't political and doesn't have to be... unless the political trolls start frothing at the mouth and make it political. Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted November 3, 2009 Author Members Posted November 3, 2009 I'm of the opinion that news reporters think we've all just fallen off the turnip truck... the recession is over (they said) because of "all the new jobs" the stimulus packages have provided. Yet no one I know who is out of work has gotten a job due to that. The recession isn't over for anyone I know. People keep losing their jobs because companies are still outsourcing work to foreign countries. We need to keep jobs HERE.....not in Singapore or Korea. Case in point: There are many places in the US that can manufacture the vaccine for the swine flu. We are using only a small portion of those places. Most of the vaccine is manufactured overseas. The TV news (ABC) reported that we are low on vaccine because these other countries want enough vaccine for *their* population before they will start to send it over to the US. There was an upswing in the economy right before the Great Depression. What got us out of the Great Depression was WWII and the jobs that it created. I would hope that America learned some lessons from that. We don't need a world war. We need jobs - ones that are being given to companies overseas. Woody Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 Great observations there Pam. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
GreatLakesGramma Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 I read that the recession is over because manufacturing is showing growth. But that growth is not translating into more jobs. In fact, jobs are still being lost. So the recession may be over according to the economists, but that is not helping us one bit. And that growth won't last if people don't start buying those new goods that are being manufactured, and people aren't going to do that so long as other people around them are still losing their jobs. Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted November 6, 2009 Author Members Posted November 6, 2009 Associated Press 11/6/09 - The unemployment rate has hit double digits for the first time since 1983 — and is likely to go higher. The 10.2 percent jobless rate for October shows how weak the economy remains even though it is growing. The rising jobless rate could threaten the recovery if it saps consumers' confidence and makes them more cautious about spending as the holiday season approaches. The October unemployment rate — reflecting nearly 16 million jobless people — jumped from 9.8 percent in September, the Labor Department said Friday. The job losses occurred across most industries, from manufacturing and construction to retail and financial. Economists say the unemployment rate could surpass 10.5 percent next year because employers are reluctant to hire. the whole story Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. Gus Foster Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 My study shows that we shall have a major 'double dip' probably early next spring which will make the stock market average to around 4200. The true unemployment rate is about 20.7% according to honest evaluators. May I suggest you refer to Bob Chapman (you can google his name) or go to www.theinternationalforcastor.com Bob has the true heartbeat of the economy. Members phkrause Posted November 7, 2009 Members Posted November 7, 2009 I wouldn't doubt that figure Gus. I've been unemployed now for 17-18 months, and have run out of my umemployment benefits and no longer collect, waiting for the next extension. So there are probably as many people in the same boat, that have gone past there benefits. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Another media source, acquainted with the reality of where we in America really are, quoted 22% unemployment as the real figure. Those who have been unemployed for longer than a certain time are no longer considered part of the work force, therefor are not considered as part of the unemployed percentage. As one person from, I believe it was Russia said, only in America would they believe that cutting off the bottom of the blanket and sewing it on the top, would make the blanket longer. This was alluding to daylight savings time making the workday longer. Planey Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 My mom lives down the street from me, but she is 84 yrs old.... and she has made it very plain that she doesn't want me to live with her, even though she has a large house. I don't really have any friends around here where i live who I could turn to. I have a large house to myself so you are more than welcome to share. You could live at one end and me at the other. Share kitchen and laundry but you would have your own bathroom. Of course my home is a little bit more than "down the street" but our employment prospects are better than the USA. You would, of course, have to learn to speak correct English. That might be a bit of a worry, hehe.
